When a game says something, then does the complete opposite, there's a problem with the game. Focus Energy cutting your crit rate instead of increasing it is clearly not how it's supposed to work. Maybe we were just more forgiving about games back in those days. Maybe it was the grand appeal of collecting, trading and battling with friends that made us overlook all these problems.
But I am under the belief that if a game were released today with as many bug and glitches as the original Pokemon games had, it would not catch on in the same way.
You can go ahead and call this bait, but keep in mind that the majority of those "nitpicky" problems were fixed in gen 2. They knew they had issues, and they fixed them.
