Types being all-physical or all-special made some mons even more overpowered and totally gimped others. Alakazam has been mentioned, and while I liked my Houdoom with its special Crunch and Fire Blast, it made no fucking sense.
And I didn't even know that Ghost was considered physical in gen II, because the games were really shit at documenting this.
I just applied common sense and had a shit move on Gengar all the time. Because you would think that the best user of Shadow Ball is Flareon (another mon that was totally gimped back then and continues to be pretty gimped today)
