Pokemon fever had taken the world by storm. Ever since then Game Freak and Nintendo learned they could put a minimum amount of effort into mechanics for an RPG and people will still pay money for it. If the original generation hadn't taken off and flopped hard you wouldn't be arguing with anons about Swagger, Baton Pass or Deosharp teams on the Pokemon board on 4chan. Unless of course you're one of those individuals who likes Tauros and Alakazam on every team.
