It was before I had discovered serebii so I couldn't spoil anything for myself, rayquaza, latias... I don't even remember how I heard about the games, but I remember importing from america via a specialist store, and man was I excited.
The story seemed epic in comparison to the previous generations, and to this day I still think they are the most solid set of legends of any gen. I was also still young enough that to fall for the mystery of things like the Jirachi/Deoxys playground rumors, which was good. Finally I hadn't heard of EVs/IVs or competetive yet. They have ruined one side of the game for me, I will never again know the feeling of thinking you can take on anybody with just your in game bros again.
