The newer gens are far more forgiving in terms of 'boss' battles (rivals/gym/e4), and recovery points (ex. Gen 5's nurses/doctors every other route).
I'd say that the only game where it isn't true is Platinum version, which had average amounts of healing but greatly ramped up the difficulty on boss battles (as it should be). It had the most competent rival, the strongest evil team fights (at least for early/mid game; ex. early Purugly/Skuntank fight), etc. Short of romhacks like BlazeBlack/etc, it's the most difficult nuzlocke for a reason.
I really like the idea of the third/sequel game in a series being a 'hard mode'-esque follow up. And not like the disappointingly bad actual Hard Mode that B2W2 tried to do.
