Red and Blue you could only get them in the grass on the route below Pallet Town (or trade for one at Cinnabar), in Yellow it was a rare as hell Safari mon only, in GSC it was on the route right before Ice Path and Route 28, It was a Great Marsh Pokemon in Platinum, it was near the Giant Chasm in Gen 5, and it's a Friend Safari Pokemon in XY. It's very much a blink and you miss it Pokemon.
Part of the reason I like it though is that there used to be rumors that there was a powerful Pokemon in the grass below Pallet, so when I got Surf, I flew back to Pallet and hunted around. I was initially disappointed that it was just a Tangela, but the little guy kinda grew on me.
