The best Pokemon was Psychic.

However, Normal generally beat Psychic most of the time.

Also, the only Psychic attack that mattered was Psychic, while Normal had Slash, Body Slam, Hyper Beam, and Wrap.

Golem and Rhydon are equally typed, as are Lapras and Cloyster.
As for Gengar, Zapdos and Dragonite, they're flawed but potentially really good.

Gengar's job was to eat normal attacks aimed at squishy psychics. This allowed him to block Body Slam / Slash / Hyper Beam / Explosion, etc. Wrap wouldn't hurt him, but it would still lock him (b/c GEN I shenanigans).

Zapdos with Drill Peck and Thunderbolt was the only mixed attacker in the game worth a shit.

Dragonite was WRAPHAX the movie.

On the other hand, Gengar had no STAB, no physical bulk and no Levitate.
As for Zapdos, walled for all eternity by Golem and Rhydon (and Jolteon and Chansey, to an extent).
Dragonite was fairly good, but 85% accuracy on Wrap was not exceedingly reliable. Also very vulnerable to paralysis and Ice moves.
