Dawn was specifically stated to be 10 in DP, while Ash wasn't. Ash was continuously stated to be some kind of teacher towards her and she looked up to him. Plus it was visible that he was a lot more mature than he was in AG and OS. He had to be older than 10 or 11 in DP. I'd honestly say he was 13 in DP.

Volt Tackle was the Pikachu attack, it was the move only Pikachu could use (besides that one Raichu in a filler). Pikachu used it only when it truly needed it, it was Ash's trump card. For an attack like that to be taken out for Electro Ball, an attack that numerous other Pokemon in the saga used, including Iris' Emolga, I feel like the writers went full retard with BW.

To be real real for a bit, the problem is is that he has no "characterization". He's just...there. He's simply there, he does this, he does that, he applies his superpower, he wins, and he loses. Things happen. Nothing really comes alive with him, ya get my drift? He isn't maximum overedge, but rather the opposite problem. Even some EDGE would have been better than the blank slate we got. Even his clothes are bland, and say nothing about him. Except that scarf/hood lining, which is gayer than San Francisco. Though to be fair, it's only his first episode. But I don't see it changing too much.

That would probably be the best end for Ash's journey. Ash becoming Kalos champion, getting the Serena, and become the "pokemon master" for when the new MC comes out and talks about how he wants to beat Ash.

Someone who's simply there is like the MC from Asobi no Ikuyo who fits exactly what you said about "does this, does that." Alan's got some characterization and life in him though they're pretty basic. A soft heart for pokemon illustrated by his relationship with Charizard, clear goal to be strongest, respectful etc and that's fine.
My biggest problem with him is that his main characteristic which should distinguish him (being aloof and acting "cool" while having a soft heart underneath) is hard to show without a support cast and that's where he strikes out. He's like Sesshomaru from Inuyasha and Manon's the little kid. He needs the kid to soften him up to the point that he's looking out for her like a parent, teacher or big brother. He also needs a rival to play off against. We already saw him help and seemingly accept Manon so maybe he'll get better. Maybe. We just have to trust in the loli.
It's like in real life. A silent guy acting cool, brooding while sitting alone in a table VS a guy acting like a concerned yet aloof big brother or worthy rival. The former just looks weird/funny while the latter might actually make you think "hey, that guy's pretty cool." Unless of course you're a fangirl who thinks Redgy is the COOLEST EVER.
