Decided to make my own pokemon region based in Southern Ontario, Canada.

I call it Atmosa, a region based on weather, since Canada has some pretty weird weather some times. Especially this time of year. Let me know what you think.

It's based off Hamilton, actually, because of it's Steel Mills. I know the legend is a bit confusing, the 11 you're looking at is the Abandoned Terminal in the Areas.

As far as help goes, i'll never turn down feedback or suggestions. Most of the work has been done, though. I've picked out the gym leaders, etc. There are a few things that need to be done. Help is always appreciated

Okay, i'll use this from now on.

I've got a few original pokemon, but i'll be using mostly established ones. On that note, I will be making up original starters and legendaries, only a few of which have been fully thought up,

The starters will be:
> Fire/Fairy
> Water/Steel
> Grass/Fighting

The Legends are
> Dynrir (Dark/Ground)
> Astorn (Psychic/Water)

>Dynrir is based off of Fenrir, from Norse mythos, and the theme of dystopia.
>Astorn is based off the swans that that swim in the Well or Urd, also based off of Norse mythos.

Names are subject to change if something better comes up.

For the Water starter, might I suggest a mastodon over an elephant? You'd have to ditch the steel typing (Empoleon already did it anyway) for obvious Ice or Ground typing, but I think it'd work thematically for Canada.

If not that's cool too; just a thought.

My idea for the regional rodent is a marmot with a hockey stick-shaped tail and a head that vaguely resembles a helmet. Basically an allusion to hockey.

For fossils, I was thinking of things along the lines of troodon and argentinosaurus (size extremes on both ends). We need more bigger, bulkier-looking fossils (aside from Bastiodon) and I think something titanosaur-based would fit the build. There's also a lack of fast fossil Pokemon (aside from Aerodactyl), which something small like troodon would fit. Neither Canadian by any means, but then there aren't many Canadian dinosaurs to begin with (aside from Pachyrhinosaurus and Albertosaurus, but Bastiodon and Tyrantrum pretty much fulfill their roles with similar designs).

The Marmot idea sounds adorable, it could be Normal/ice in its second form, as well.

Both look pretty interesting to base a pokemon off of, but it's hard not to do repeats. The Argentinosaurus could wind up looking to much like Arurorus. What do you think about a sabertooth tiger?

Argentinosaurus wouldn't be cute or go for the beauty theme like Aurorus did. On top of that, better typing and a more physical and defensive stat spread might make for a) a more viable Pokemon, b) create contrast between fossils and c) a chance to create another massive Pokemon the likes of Wailord and Steelix. So consider that before you cast it aside.

But I can see how the general body form would be a concern. A sabertooth would work really well with the region, albeit I think it'd be weird to pair it with a Troodon.

for the comic you should consider basing it on Urobos instead. You'd have to sacrifice your creative input regarding the region and pokemon but have the benefit of an inbuilt group of fans and the lack of a need for design heavy-lifting. The designs are all guaranteed to be approved of to a decent extent.

You'd still be able to create your own characters and lore. AT the very least consider it

I was thinking of making a "chibi" legendary, like Mew, Celebii, Jirachi, Shaymin, Meloetta, you get what I mean? Those tiny legends that are supposed to be cute, but I had no idea what to do for it. A trillium is perfect! Thank you for suggesting that.

Maybe make the Base Marmot just normal type, like how bidoof was only normal but bibarel was normal/water.

You've got the right ideas on all of these. I want Sylvanity's line to be strong special walls, but weak regular defence. I figure it would make sense, since they're supposed to be made of glass.

Faeny will be a special attacker primarily, with decent special defenses.

The water/ice mastodon is going to be a strong special attacker with high defence and/or hp

The grass/fighting is going to be a strong attacker with decent speed.

The psychic gym leader I believe will be Aboriginal, but in addition the Grass gym leader could be too, though i plan on making him a park ranger. There could be a group of people, Aboriginals, who live inside Atmosa National Park.

I was thinking that the aboriginals could be involved with this region's legendary dogs, since I know I want to use them. If you look closely on the HD map, you can see a totem pole on the middle plains. I already had it so Ho-oh was on top, and there are little symbols for the legendary dogs on it. It was just going to be a little thing, but I can build around that.

Make Rob Ford the mayor of Hazopolis. He stood by idly or failed to prevent the evil team from taking over the city. Then he'll claim to be the one who saved the city after the protagonist does

Use the Toronto Islands as a post-game or something. You could also make a sinjoh ruins on the east but instead of Sinnoh and Johot, it's between Atmos+Unova and Kalos (Montreal), since Kalos had Unovan legends in Parfum Palace.

Wait, a mammoth might work. If we do something a little less hairy like the Columbian Mammoth or Steppe Mammoth, it might work. Doing so wouldn't conflict with the mastodon starter either because of how the plain mammoths were built (they've both got trunks and tusks, sure, but even then we can alter the designs so they look different). Hell, it'd even be a nice predator/prey pair with the saber.

Suicune and Enteir share very canine-like features. Suicune resembles a whippet or greyhound far more than it does a cheetah, as suggested on bulbapedia. Strong Jaw is a great idea for the sabertooth. i don't think the Mamoth should come out being stronger than the Sabertooth, since the sabertooth is meant to be the predator, but I like the focus on defensive stats.

OP, you know what I just realized? There are no moose Pokemon. We've got Sawsbuck and Stantler, but they're more along the lines of whitetail and caribou. And because this region is based on Ontario, it'd be heresy not to include one (same goes for a loon too, if you think that's a good idea).

I can agree with the first half, I should research the cities more, and probably will. However doing Ontario as a whole would be a bit of a waste. I don't know if you live in Ontario, but northern Ontario is pretty much cottage country and lakes. I'd be sacrificing geographical detail for pretty much nothing. No towns or cities, except Thunder Bay and Ottawa, maybe. I don't think that's a good idea at all.

Just read this post. Water/Steel moose could totally work with a big cannon on his back.

For the grass type, you could do a beaver. Canada deserves a better beaver then Biderp, and since beavers build dams and cut down trees, it could make its own wooden sword/staff. The weapon could get more refined as the mon evolves.

Well Toronto for starters is a very multicultural city. So multicultural in fact that sections of the city show off certain cultures. There's Chinatown near Gerrard and Spadina, Little Italy on the Danforth, J-Town up north near Steeles, etc.
The Harbourfront (which is near the Toronto Islands) is also a popular tourist spot, there are ferries there with which you can go to Centre Island
There are a stupid amount of shopping centres in Toronto and there are concerts or events happening often in Dundas square. Also featured in Dundas square are a plethora performing artists, musicians, dancers, homeless or not.
Toronto in design is basically Lumiose but more rugged looking half the time
Guelph is.. a little plain, as you might expect being way out of the way of cities like Toronto and its suburbs.
We've got a really small downtown area, littered with little independent, quirky businesses, and then we just have the University and the campuses.

You should definitely highlight some other parts of TO. You could use the underground PATH as a place where trainers go to battle. Spadina st, Kensington Market and the campuses ate cool too. You could make church.st full of FABULOUS trainers and pokemon.

Guelph is definitely plainer. You could have a fucking huge church to Arceus in the centre of town to mimic church of out lady. Guelph had a vivid bootleg and mafia history as well, so having mob/ team rocket (or w/e) themed guys would fit.

While I apologize for Ottawa not being included, you should try to understand that's it's just too far away from everything else I wanted to included. Stretching out the map to include Ottawa would have sacrificed some map detail, and I am already pushing it with the spacing of some towns. Maybe it's possible to include Ottawa in another way, in a similar manner to Kiloude City in X/Y, but we'll see.

Might now be a bad idea so there's something to fall back on, plus we can just keep it on the backburner until it needs to be dealt with.

I've updated all starter final form BSTs (as well as 1st and 2nd stages, which follow the same basic spread) to reflect the water starter's shift to being physical (that way it's more balanced - you've got a fast pokemon, a special pokemon, and physical pokemon):

Final Grass Starter (Grass/Fighting)
Ability: Overgrow
85/111/77/68/77/117(BST - 535)

Final Fire Starter (Fire/Fairy)
Ability: Blaze
70/73/73/117/105/97 (BST - 535)

Final Water Starter (Water/Steel)

I personally used the opportunity to tie the starters together a bit better - note how they all have one great stat of 117 in Speed, Special Attack, and Attack, respectively.

But the only issue I can think of with this is that it might be hard to make each area feel really unique. You want them all to be very visually different so that they maintain an identity, but that's easier said than done. Consider the stereotypical "China Town" aesthetic of reds and golds and tacky China-ish decor. Like one big Chinese restaurant. What could we take from each region to give those areas that kind of uniqueness?
I'm American, so please excuse any significant cultural differences between our media's portrayals of China towns and those of Canada. I'm not well versed on how different our media is in stuff like that.

I think, for the sake of game logic, we'll have to exagerate it significantly. What aesthetics can we take from the regions to make each area look individual? Johto was very natural, so maybe lots of greenery, Hoenn is famous for its water, so a dock-and-fish-centric look could be cool, Kalos' could take elements from Lumiose but do we really need that in an already France-influenced region? Again, I'm not an expert on Canadian culture, so I'm just making loose suggestions. I don't really know what could be done for Kanto, Sinnoh, or Unova. Thoughts?

If OP wants to do a "Johto Town" subsection of Hazopolis City, I've got a fairly eastern tileset I can use. A dock would be fairly easy to make too for a Hoenn Town. We don't really need Unovan elements because NYC and Toronto are fairly similar... though incorporating a couple of things like the Castelia cone is entirely possible. Sinnoh Town would have an older look to it, kinda like Johto Town (eastern, but not so much). No ideas for Kanto though. From Johto, we could take old-era japanese style buildings, like you'd fine in Ecruteak and Azalea towns in Johto, and old-Japan.

For Hoenn, it would have to be that tropical beach feel. Obviously the beaches and harbourfront neighbourhood would fit this perfectly.

For Sinnoh I'm honestly not sure, either something religious or space-themed. Maybe the "Discovery District" near the U of T, i'll think on that more.

Kalos could fit in with the Fashion district, and it's possible to repurpose a section to be a "cafe district" or something.

Kanto is tough to consider, but perhaps the financial district could mimc this partially, in small ways, including maybe a Silph Co. building? I'm going to think more on this for sure and keep reading up on other areas of Toronto.

Any other cities I've included I should build on in particular?

Going to throw a quick idea out here, too. I'm thinking I want to have a legendary Pokemon that evolves, but also evolves entirely depending on the version you're playing. You could link it into the anime maybe and have Jessie and James running the Casino, or even the Admins from HGSS. Or there's the grunt from Cerulean in HGSS who talks with an accent, or even Giovanni himself.

The upper most area is the Battle Frontier, so I've included a battle tower.

The area south of that misty forest leading down from the mountain is a back-road route leading into Riverstone Gorge. It's steep and dangerous.

The autumn forest is sort of a lost-woods around Foghaunt Town. It's winding and hard to navigate and full of ghost and dark types.

The jagged looking road is victory road, the route has been partially swallowed up by the lake. Traveling it takes a lot of initiative, as the direct road often breaks off at cliff faces and the lakeshore.

Themes have been repeated before. Charmander, Totodile, and Treeko are all bipedal lizards, just in different typing categories.

As for the grass typing dispute, it's final form will be more grassy, using leaves as armour, though the other forms aren't that grassy I suppose. The designs aren't final, so i appreciate the feedback. And not that it counts for much, but he is supposed to be green. Also, ask yourself this: How are Mawile and Lucario steel types? Without their pokedex entries they wouldn't be very steel-like. Regardless, this is something I should think about. Thank you

Yeah, I figured they would be green. And I don't care the dogs being similar to gen6 foxes, but both using sticks is a striking similarity. But I'm not saying you can't execute it well.

You're right about Lucario, and there are a few other pokemon like that. But starters have always been quite obvious in their typings, hence why it struck me the way it did. The bunny looks cool too, but as of yet I don't see the fire either. Looking forward to seeing coloured versions though.

Glad you like it! Klefki actually kind of inspired me to make Sylvanity. I know there have always been a few inanimate object pokemon, but Klefki kind of opened up my mind to new ideas. Sylvanity was the first pokemon idea I had for this region, too.

That would be really awesome! I don't know anything about that stuff but I always thought a tabletop pokemon would be really interesting. Maybe when this stuff gets further developed it can be incorporated into the table top stuff

Oh its painlessly easy. Take base stat, Round the ones number then eliminate the 0, Bam, new base stat. The rest is just making moves fit with the damage ratings and of course, balance. Check it out.

But before I can do that, what sort of layout did you have in mind for the starting town? I can put pretty much anything as well as attempt to make new landmarks if you want (no promises).
