As much as I like him as a rival and as good as his team is, his battle theme is my least favorite of all rival themes. Maybe even my least favorite battle them in general.

Hugh has the best rival theme in my opinion.

Shame, his story could have been so much better if it wasn't for the whole UNLEASH MUH RAGE and PURRLOIN bits. If we saw more of him knocking back grunts and making them speak up like in that one Driftveil scene, could have been great honestly that your rival gives more of a fuck about beating an organisation for something taken from him rather than becoming champ.

Y'know, I was about to respond by saying Hugh's theme wasn't all that memorable for me, but then I listened to those links you posted, and it's pretty good. I guess I didn't pay much attention to it during the actual game.

DPPt's Rival is still really good too though. And I think May/Brendan's theme comes in at 3rd place for me.

Aside from the rival music, I actually am one of those who likes Hoenn's music the best. Specifically the Hoenn Gym Leader Battle.

Sadly they ruined the final rival battle not evolving Brandan/May's starter and having his/her whole team kinda underleveled, and they didn't even a chance to rematch them.

Sure, you can always rematch Wally, which is a cool guy, but he has no rival theme.

barry is the best rival. his team was actually pretty competent and provided more of a challenge than any other rival's team has, he had a good personality and was pretty unique. he was awesome. gen iv a best.

Gen IV was just a really good gen for music. DPPt was great. PMD2 was elder god tier. Hell, even the Ranger game's music was pretty good.

His theme is the only one that truly fits the traditional fictional definition of rival to an R.

Even if its owner doesn't fully deliver on its promises it says "I'm an obstacles you must surpass, I'm stronger than you, I'm smarter than you, I'm better than you, I'll crush you and leave you in the dirt to laugh at while rubbing my nose."

That is what the fuck makes a true rival, they don't ever want to be your friend.

All they want is to kick your ass, to beat you.
