You did, for a time, need the GCN games to Catch Em all

For most of gen 3 and 4 they were the only way to get a lot of Johto Mons. HG/SS removed the need for Colosseum XD

Character customization isn't going anywhere.

While I wouldn't be shocked to see Amie go, I also wouldn't bank on it. At the very least, we will probably see something very similar that lets us play with out Pokemon. Interacting with 700+ Pokemon took a fair bit of time, I'd be willing to bet they justified it by making sure it would be easy to port to future generations.

More realistic features that will go the way of the Duodo will be Trainer PR Videos and Friend Safari.

I dunno, it seemed too browsergame-like to me. You should be rewared for actual effort, like: you streetpass someone, you gain access to his/her avenue, you buy something if the price is good, when you streetpass again they get an upgrade.

There was a Day/Night function, it's just that it was extremely limited, didn't show up visually, and solely existed for compatibility with Espeon/Umbreon, Pokerus, and some minor things that have no major effect on gameplay, like the Lilicove sale and Shoal Cave.

To an extent. When the clock hits midnight, the game will sometimes cure a Pokemon of Pokerus.
When the internal battery dies and the clock stops functioning, Pokerus will never be cured.
