They aren't modeling shit. Red was ripped from Brawl, and all the other Pokémon shown are from the Poképark games.
Also, with the exception of Red, all the models were just tossed into a scene still in their T-pose

If you exit back to the menu, then start a new game, you keep all of your old pokemon in addition to getting another 3 starters. Kind of silly.

Gen II NEEDED remakes.

Simple as that.

The originals pushed Game Boy memory to the limits. And with the massive scope, they had to cut out a significant amount of Kanto to bring it back.

All the assets were ripped from various sources, so I highly doubt they'd bother to make the engine from scratch. It's pretty clearly an amateur project.
