Alright, a more serious set this time. A support set from one of the better bulky pokemon in the doubles environment

Hitmontop (M)
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Def / 40 Atk / 76 SDef
Impish Nature
- Mach Punch
- Quick Guard
- Fake Out
- Rock Slide

The EVs guarantee that it will live Adamant Life Orb Talonflame Brave Bird and Timid megazard Y's air slash and heat wave in the sun. It can then dent both with rock slide.

Moves are completely up to you, but these show its best supporting potential. Quick Guard and Fake Out make it a great team player, Mach Punch picks up weakened opponents for the KO and rock slide is for coverage, and KO's the popular charizard and talonflame.

The 40 attack EVs are leftover, and are needed to get the KO onto talonflame with rock slide. You could possible put them into speed, but this set uses priority too much for that to matter. You could put them into either defense stat, but you're achieving marginal gain in either regard.
This set guarantees the KO on talonflame and does 90% minimum on charizard, meaning it needs some chip damage on zard before you can get the KO.

Remember that quick guard will block talonflame's brave bird! and fake out is super super strong.

They're explained in detail in the doc. In summary, games are played in flat battle format with a best 2 out of 3, with babbys 1st dubs clause - a custom rule for this tournament.

Babby's 1st dubs clause is basically
>No moody, dark void or perish song
>No pokemon that cannot be bred - by extension, nothing with gen 3 move tutor moves
Will probably allow perish song and just complex ban perish trapping.
The pokemon restriction means nothing like heatran, cress, genies etc which have to be RNG'd or genned. Gen 3 tutor move pokemon are banned because it's impossible to breed them competitively.
The idea isn't to ban pokegen - it's so that people who suck dick at gen or who don't have bank can still play too.

The goal of this ruleset is to make it easier for newer players to adapt. In the next tourney, we may just ditch any custom rules altogether.

The idea here is to survive Charizard Y's sunboosted multi-hitting shenanigans, that many reffer to as Heat Wave. while being able to hit hard back with a LO Rock Slide, which is sure to OHKO, unless the Charizard is physically bulky.

The reason for the remaining 4 Spd EVs is because I couldn't think of a single threat, that Mamoswine is able to naturally outspeed in the first place, except for Ferrothorn and almost any fighting type, which shits all over Mamoswine anyways. That, and it would do literally no difference in the other stats.

252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 116 HP / 92 SpD Mamoswine: 208-246 (104 - 123%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Unfortunately, you need a spread of 144 HP and 252 special defense with a spD neutral nature to live timid charizard's solarbeam. It's a matchup where mamo should just switch out of unfortunately :/

However, you've intrigued me of the potential of an assault vest set. If I can find a working spread I'll definitely post it here

Given EVs mean that you live anything from Modest Charizard Y and KO it back with rock slide. Charizard needs 252 HP/100 defense to survive this rock slide with a neutral nature, so that's not happening (though some japanese guy ran a 252 HP charizard at a VGC event)
56 Defense means Mawile won't KO you with Play Rough, but it will kick your ass with Iron Head anyway. Garchomp and Talonflame ain't got shit, even with EQ and Flare blitz respectively.

First three slots are standard, last is an optional tech. Superpower can put Kanga down to about 91%, which is almost in range of sandstorm or burn damage to KO. Icicle Crash is just a stronger neutral STAB option.

Might want to re-read that one m8. I'm restricting pokemon that MUST be RNG'd or pokegenned to have good natures and so on. So, heatran, cresselia, swords of justice and gen 3 tutor pokemon, which cannot be bred for naturs and IVs, are banned from the competition as not everyone can use pokegen.
It's only for this competition while the newer players adapt to the faster paced doubles format.

Question though, since so far your banlist looks a lot like ours: while it's good to see that seismic toss is banned on kanga, what is your opinion on banning PuP as well on her?

I know singles is a different metagame than doubles -- in the singles of the monotype tourney, a kanga that isn't able to use either of those moves has still proven to still be a significant threat, albeit one that isn't nearly as overpowered as before

I'm always happy to help teambuild. Glad you're getting results though.
It's not impossible to use singles sets in doubles, but it's not effective by any means.
You can just try slapping on protect and fake-out on pokemon and see how you go.

I feel like you're missing the point of babby's 1st dubs clause - I'm not restricting things because they're particularly 'broken' like they are in singles. Actually, I'd go as far as to say that there are no broken strategies in doubles and that everything has a place in the meta, and the strongest strategies influence the metagame to be prepared for them. For example, why does every singles team carry a stealth rocker and a spinner? Same principle - most strategies i've banned in babby's 1st dubs clause can be dealt with by a single prankster cat (meowstic and liepard).

To actually answer your question, no, this isn't singles and power up punch does have a place on kanga in this format. I understand how powerful Kanga gets in singles with this move, but in doubles, a clever switch or protect can easily reverse the situation.
The reason seismic toss is banned is only because you have to gen for a seismic kanga - and I don't want a standard where players without gen are behind players with it.

Pardon the wall of text, I feel that this is an issue that may recur so I thought it'd be good to address it now.

Definitely - I originally wanted to make a non-claused tournament, but there were a lot of people who were too hesitant to enter a competition with no limit on evasion, sleep and so on. The next competition may well be clause-less.
I didn't want to limit sleeping and evasion since they are both part of this game, but I did ban dark void since that move is arguably just scum and only forces people to carry safeguard.

Please do consider joining regardless, our bracket so far has 15/18 players confirmed. Even if you don't agree with the restrictions, you can still play casually in this competition and practise your team-building.
Plus, having none of the traditional powerhouses like Cress and the genies will show for an interesting format.

If your team hinges on just those two spamming surf and discharge, you're going to be dissapointing. But if you an somehow make a surf/discharge core, where you can spam spread moves every turn and still switch in? That would be incredible, but needs a lot of careful team building.

These are only prelims so you can play on showdown if your partner is cool with that.
You'll have to breed an actual team for the competition, but that's some ways away. Besides that, you typically don't need more than 4IV bred pokemon so it shouldn't take long. And barring that, I'd be happy to help you prepare.

hey dude, the competition isn't live so you don't have to be on at a certain time of day. How it works is that you're paired up with someone and you have roughly a week or so to get a game in with a possibility for extensions.
Getting a hold of your opponent really just depends on where they live and their schedule. If things can't work out (like, an absolute worst case scenario) then it'll probably just count as a draw and we'll move on, or I'll try and pair you up with someone else.

Honestly, I think that's probably a bit too rare an occurrence to specifically prepare for. A faster taunter is usually sufficient and will help against a lot more strategies than some rare gimmick. And even with strats like in >>18773439, a simple burn, toxic, leech seed, or even confusion will take care of it.

To add to what you've written, since this is a 'bring 6 pick 4' format, entry hazards are very rare and not particularly effective (though I could theorymon all day about how tyranitar could switch into mega charizard Y, scare it out and setup rocks on the switch but etc etc). So I wouldn't be worried too much about sticky web.

In particular, people need to be aware that protect exists which means they shouldn't always go for obvious attacks. Charizard Y will never attack in the face of a garchomp or aerodactyl, for example - if it's not protecting, it's switching (unless the charizard player is 2gud and stacks up layers of prediction).
Spread moves also exist, and this is important - Rock slide, for example, has the 30% flinch but now against both pokemon on your side of the field.
In experience, quick guard is more prevalent than wide guard. Just remember, once you've revealed you're carrying either guard, the other guy will likely not use their spread/priority move again.

You'd best accept that the timer is always going to be a part of nintendo format competitions and that timerstalling has always been a legitimate strategy in the VGC format.
There is a timer in flat battles too, but I do believe it is very long (something like forty minutes IIRC).

I think you need to experience the pain of being stalled by a ghourgheist or something so you can appreciate the timer. You need to be in a situation where you've easily KO'd every single pokemon on the other guy's team, made all the right predictions and plays but didn't bring something for just one pokemon and are paying for it.
That's what happened to me one VGC tournament yonks ago. I made the mistake of not calling timer on him and ended up losing because of it. He definitely wasn't the better player, he just had a situational out to key pokemon on my team.

How are you supposed to defeat time stall? Add more seconds to your clock? Whine to a moderator?

I've had times against Japanese players where it was my Blissey vs their Toxic Stall Aegislash. Stall vs stall is never fun, but when they wait about 79 seconds to choose each attack and run out the clock, that, to me, is offensive. Even when I run stall teams, rarely do matches ever last 30 minutes, but.... yeah.

Look, I'm not even running stall in this tournament, don't get any ideas about my motives. It's a style of play I enjoy using in singles sometimes, that's all. Running stall in doubles isn't the brightest idea.

The point is that time stall is useful in order to beat stall teams. The average VGC game only lasts around 7 turns or so. Plus, a vaporeon using Celebrate obviously isn't attacking you, so you essentially have a 2 vs 1 matchup if your opponent tries using this from the get-go. The only time this may be useful is in situations like >>18780000 pointed out where a single Gourgeist is walling your team after you killed off the last 3 members.

white herb is a bad item on rotom for reasons you just saw. intimidate is everywhere in doubles, and you'll only burn it early. try to doctor a bulky spread and give it sitrus berry.

i dont think any of your pokemon had protect - greninja didn't even have mat block. actually, i think your whole team was a singles team. try and fit protect on your pokemon.

Also, in TR, if two pokemon use priority, the one which is slower gets their priority off first. For example, in TR, if an adamant mawile and a brave mawile both try to sucker punch each other, the brave mawile goes first and gets its attack off. Outside of TR, the adamant mawile goes first and gets its sucker punch off.

No. There is no requirement for having a set team, so everyone may change their teams up.

Firstly, I am going to make all battle videos private. I will use them only to be sure that there are no players with teams against the rules - keep in mind they can post their videos publicly if they want.

Secondly, counter-teaming or meta-gaming is just not a solid strategy. It's like running facade on mega-kangaskhan - you need your opponent to do something to partially fulfil your team's win condition. If they decide to bring another team, or if their team was ready for counters anyway then it's a completely moot point. Counter-teaming isn't a good strategy.

Last point, if someone plans to win rounds with one-dimensional strategies (ie, a gimmick) then they better have a full-bag of tricks, because we've got both a five round preliminary and the actual competition to get through. Gimmicks will only get you so far.

I believe flexible teams is very important for newer players to adapt to doubles. As they play through the prelim rounds and get more experienced, they'll naturally want to make tweaks and changes to their team, and I want them to be able to do so.

This is something that needs testing and is very much up to player preference.
What is that pokemon's job? Can it still do its job with only two other moves (protect/guard/X/X)? Do you need that pokemon to stick around in the long run? If so, is it particularly frail or does it have lots of weaknesses?

If you answered mostly yes to the last three, consider protect. As always, pokemon showdown is a great way to test, just be prepared for heatran, genies, lati@s and the like.

I've used support talonflame before. It's surprisingly good. I actually found Flare Blitz to be more useful than Brave Bird if you're only having one attacking move, especially if you have tailwind to boost your already massive speed, and/or taunt to stop trick room getting up.

Talonflame is not bulky enough to run an all-support set, but you can almost always tech a support option or two onto it easily.
What I mean is, you can run any of the regular offensive options (flare blitz, brave bird and u-turn) complimented with whatever else you choose.

That's how I feel about talonflame. I've never tried a full-support set, and I personally just run all-out attack sets with choice-band most the time since it's the easiest and most degenerate set around, but when I do run life orb/sky plate, the support option depends on the rest of the team. I used quick guard on a trick room team, tailwind on a team of pokemon with middling speed tiers and I've only ever used taunt and will o wisp when no other pokemon on the team has those options.

I haven't had enough experience on support talonflame to make any recommendations, so test it out yourself or ask the gentleman anon above me for more info.

They can be used back to back yes, but they also increase the 'protect' counter, so i can confirm for you that they do affect protect's chance of working. IIRC, they reduced the chance for a double protect this gen to 30% on the second attempt, I believe.

Not all the people participating have lots of doubles experience. You have until the 14th to get a team ready for your first real battle, but there's plenty of time to do practice matches and ask for help.

You don't have to stick to the same team, so just like VGC you can change your party between battle dates. So you could continue genning/breeding new team members.

So far we have 12 pairings of registered players, 14 pairings total if you count our un-registered players. Only four more days to go until the tournament launches, this is gonna be great!
Assuming no registered players drop out, we have a 24 man competition which means 5 rounds of play, then the top 8 players make the cut and move on to a final tournament to decide the winner.

I have much experience playing trick room teams myself, so I think I can actually help you.

Firstly, you MUST identify the TR team in team preview. This is imperative - some players don't pay enough attention to team preview. For example, I played someone who brought blissey when I had two physical fighting types on my team once.
If you play against enough TR teams, you'll learn to identify them in preview, but here are some quick signs, from obvious to least obvious:
>aromatisse, slowbro/king, musharna
>nothing without prankster/priority has a base speed higher than 80
>pokemon that are utter shit outside TR, eg escavalier, rhyperior
>fake out users

Check serebii for what can learn TR and fake out, that will help you with preview reading. Fake out is important to read, because a trick room set-upper-er + fake out support is a very common TR lead.

Team preview is important to read because you must bring a well-composed team to do your absolute best - in the case of playing a trick room team, for example, leave your frail noiverns, heliolisks and electrodes (lol) behind. Try and bring pokemon with priority if you have it, and of course, the slower your mons are/the less of a fuck they give about TR, the better.
A situational counter would be to lead with TWO taunt pokemon and have both of them taunt the trick roomer while one gets fake'd out. A better strategy is to bring a fake-out user of your own and to fake out their TR user, since their fake out user will be slower than yours outside TR.

Here are some common pokemon which give TR teams trouble - m-mawile, ferrothorn, amoonguss, scizor.

When under TR, protecting with both pokemon can burn out a turn of trick room, but in a set of three this is a very predictable strategy and the TR player can make switches if you do this too often.
In general, just recognise bigger threats, predict well and protect intelligently.

things like tyranitar and mawile are good, but just remember the other guy will have pokemon with negative speed natures and 0 speed IVs to underspeed you - but you might outspeed some of his faster pokemon. for example, exploud will never underspeed mawile under TR.
What i'm trying to say is - pick your battles when trying to underspeed..pay attention to tell-tale signs like the who's protect goes first, who's leftovers goes first, who takes sandstorm damage first and so on.

aegislash is a special case because it almost always runs min speed as standard. i believe aegislash is a special pokemon where it will only take you as far as you can pilot it, and all your success will depend your playstyle.
In trick room, aegislash will typically be going first instead of last. this means if you're the kind of player who runs weakness policy, you'll be slightly gimped since you are essentially playing without an item, for example.

But yes aegi is good for TR matchups, given you play well enough. not shielding after attacking can sometimes make a big difference.

I personally don't like Aegislash under trick room since he becomes extremely vulnerable when you attack first. I feel Trick Room is best with strong and bulky pokemon, like the commonly seen Escavalier.

The "stay in shield forme and attack last" style of play really isn't optimal. Aegi gets 2HKO'd in shield form regardless (unless you're running a pro strat with defense investment and a sitrus berry like some japanese guy did, turned all 2hkos into 3hkos but that's another story) by all the important powerhouses in this game, like garchomp's EQ, kanga's sucker punch, chari-Y's heat wave, mega manectric's fire coverage and so on. And often, being left in sword form leaves you knee deep in shit without the boots for it - you will always be attacked with a spread move or status move (like wow) when you're in sword form.

Moving on, escav and rhyperior are generally just not very good pokemon, especially for trick room teams. The reason being that they can honestly do nearly nothing outside of trick room, while both have extreme weaknesses to common attacking types (fire from charizard, water from rotom, grass from amoonguss and ludicolo, ground from t-tar and garchomp, etc). If you play with them enough, you'll come to realise that they're actually dead weights when you don't have TR up.
They're not bad pokemon for a TR team, but make sure you only run one - no more than that.

The 14th will be here soon - I hope you've all at least tried tweaking the EVs on your bulky pokemon.
Remember, 252/252 spread are always bad on bulky pokemon! Here's some quick advice for a budding EV doctor -

Head to (http://pokemonshowdown.com/damagecalc/) for damage calculations, and try and come up with a suitable benchmark for your pokemon.
For example, if you want your pokemon to be bulkier on the special side - I'm going to use the example of Assault Vest Scrafty, something I've been trying to perfect. We give it the item and nature, then we stack it up against a pokemon attack which we want to live. In this case, Modest Charizard Y's heat wave, which is common in VGC.
Since we're assault vest scrafty, we don't just want to live these hits - we want to tank them. So we adjust the EVs until heat wave is at least a 3HKO. Make sure you remember to press the "Doubles" button for spread moves! In this case, Scrafty with 168 HP and 88 SpDef EVs takes a max of 47~% from Max Spatk Charizard Y, which is excellent because not everyone even runs modest. While we're at it, I'll run other heavy special attacks through the calculator too - modest salamence draco meteor also fails to do over half.
Now that we have our defensive bencharks reached, we want to make sure we can hit hard where it counts too, and this is where you start making compromises, as you will find that you probably can't satisfy benchmarks on both ends of the spectrum. But fear not! This is where team building comes into play. Make sure your pokemon's partners can handle what it can't!
In this case, we need over 200 EVs to get a guaranteed KO on salamence with ice punch - too much investment, considering we haven't touched physical defenses yet (Mega kanga, garchomp, etc...). In this case, we'll have to settle for a 2HKO on M-kang with drain punch and Ice punch on salamence. Contd

Considering we're fine with a 2HKO, we can move onto physical defenses. We're of course running an intimidate scrafty - in hopes of making our scrafty as bulky as possible on both spectrums.
On the physical side, we'd hope to live through whatever mega kang throws at as. In this case, a Fake-out + return combination, at both +0 and -1.

Pranksters are kind of a dead weight in doubles, so make sure you justify bringing whimsicott. Already I think that if the other guy has charizard Y or talonflame, he'll probably bring it since heat wave/solar beam covers half your team. Good thing that you at least have Garchomp to check him.
What kind of aegislash (mixed or special)? Also, amoonguss or ferrothorn kind of fuck up team, especially since garchomp will probably be your only spread attacker.
I would suggest hitmontop as your intimidator since it has fake out, quick guard etc but that will give you a second talonflame weakness. I'd probably go with mega manectric with the options you've put there, since it can also handle mega mawile, who can actually give your team trouble.

Remember, the team doesn't matter nearly as much as your playstyle! Just practise with what you've got and you'll be fine.

Ferro is a thing in VGC. Amoonguss is a thing in every doubles format ever. You can check both by throwing talonflame at them if you can't be bothered to suss out good options for the rest of your team.

Safeswag is a bad strategy and you win by attacking the pokemon that's getting swagger'd - if you're faster, you can double attack it before it does anything, and it if protects, that leaves the frail supporting pokemon to try to either attack or swagger you. Don't be worried about it, and consider another pokemon in whimsi's place. Priority encore is always nice after a protect though, and tailwind affords you to run adamant and modest over timid and jolly.

M-manectric is super strong. Make sure it has a HP ice or something so you can zap the dragons.
WP aegi is always sweet, just don't be afraid to invest a bit into defenses so you can live to get your WP off. Try running the numbers - you'll be surprised how much you can cut on spatk EVs, especially with a WP boost. Here's a bulky aegislash set: (can't post links on 4chan, google "Hippos in Free Fall - 5th Shade Offline Tournament 1st Place Team Report") A japanese guy ran sitrus berry to live some prominent attacks. Worked out alright.
You're right, burn and intimidate is everywhere (in VGC at least) but mixed aegi with sacred sword can one shot kang with 72 attack EVs, which is damn cool.

Hey, that Mamo set is hugely helpful and I caught wind of this from the gym challenge.

I run mono-ice most of the time for fun and personal challenge, sadly got eliminated a couple rounds back and another ice trainer outlasted me to immunity.

Ice has some potential in doubles I feel, especially being able to utilize M-Abom's power and speed more-so with trick room potential, stuff like Jynx can help provide such.

Any specific sets? Perhaps for things such as a Walrein (if he's still viable at all, my personal fave) I think Glaceon's huge blizzards may help too actually.

Singles is an inherently linear format. Bulbasaur aint got shit on Charmander, for example. The best it could do is live the hit and attack back with coverage, or switch out - actually, that's singles in a nutshell, switch or stay. There are obviously layers of prediction in that and I am making it sound more simple than it is, but that's the basic gist of it.

In doubles, defense matters a lot less. Take bulbasar + Geodude vs Squirtle and Charmander - now, no-one's safe, especially when you factor in protect. A clever protect from the bulbasaur can save it from the charmander's ember while geodude lives a hit with sturdy and KO's the charmander that's threatening its partner. Or, the squirtle can opt to break geodude;s sturdy with Fake Out (an incredibly strong move in doubles while the charmander attacks. And on top of that, we still have the option to switch as well.

This is why a mono ice team would do better in doubles than in singles. Adding an extra pokemon to each side changes the game entirely.

As for potential sets - I'd honestly have to take a hard look at different ice type pokemon and try and make something work. I'll work on something for walrein, if I make it work I'll post about it here and in the gym thread.

To rephrase your question - can you bring more than one mega to any flat rules game (where you pick potential pokemon out of your party)? The answer is yes. Should you? It depends entirely on your team composition, who your megas are and who your partners are. I've personally done it before and I can only suggest that you try it for yourself, because there are many dynamics in choosing a team at the preview.

On the subject of multiple megas, I looked around wolfe's blog and found an article about a japanese player who took mega mawile and charizard Y to a competition and was succesful with it. The article is called "Usage Stats of the Japanese Ganyu-Off" and they talk about how they both compliment each other's weaknesses. Interesting stuff.

but if i've gotta be honest, your opponents weren't that good. they were bottom rung scum who would gen the easiest team to use.
Their teams sucked, they both used dark void but didn't read your espeon @ team preview and brought nothing to deal with what was honestly a very obvious switch into espeon. One guy had a sitrus berry terrakion and tried to close combat your espeon, for example - that's the standard of opponents you had.

But how well does it retaliate against a Charizard-Y? I mean, it's purpose is to be strong, but how strong can it be? And even more important, how about after Intimidate?

To be honest though, there's a reason that Armaldo isn't seen very often in Battle Spot; it's either somewhat dysfunctional for most of the scenarios you can be subjected for in Battlespot, or there's something already in existence, that does what Armaldo can do better.

It has trouble with Mega Mawile even without Intimidate while holding Life Orb, it can't do much good against Rotom-W or Garchomp either, and it can't deal very well with Steel, Rock and Water, two of which are pretty popular choices, and the last mentioned type being boosted in the rain along with Armaldo's speed.

But I'd be a liar if I wouldn't use something like this to spice battles abit more up.

Cool set. If I may make some quick suggestions -
Firstly, definitely not enough speed. You seem to have forgotten all about our sharky little friend, arguably the best pokemon in the game, garchomp - who, with his base speed of 102, will outpace you.
However, since the goal of your defense EVs is to live any one hit and kill something, you can easily fix this by taking from your HP evs - however, charizard does 90% to you after a heat wave, which means if you it it, you'll just die from life orb, so...
I've taken the liberty of shuffling your EVs around. I've put in some extra points in speed so you at least outspeed jolly garchomp (just don't forget that everything in the 105+ speed tier will eat you) and making sure you live and KO charizard, even with a sliver of health.

To start with - you beat garchomp with only one more point of speed investment (8 EVs at level 50), so 156 speed EVs.
To live comfortably, you need to learn not to max HP for bulk. In this case, I've divided the HP evs (-8 for the speed to creep chomp)
Final set is
140 HP / 108 Atk / 96 Spd / 156 Spd
Charizard Heat wave does 80% max. As an added bonus, thunderdoge does 60% to you max. So there - you live vs the two toughest mega special attackers.

What >>18818849 says is true though. You struggle against the physical attackers of this format.

For supporting that armaldo - you're definitely going to want to deal with mawile some way or another. I'd recommend good 'ol banded talonflame but its obvious and mawile does usually have intimidate on its side for dealing with talonflame. Pyroar was an effective anti-meta pokemon in the Japanese VGC format, check wolfe's blog on that.
You also need to handle rotom, amoonguss and all the other popular pokemon. Well... Talonflame beats amoonguss, an amoonguss of your own will wall their amonguss while countering rotom and any other waters... It also appreciates the rain weakening charizard and talonflame (wait fuck, you can't run talonflame in a rain team counter mawile, just realised). That's a good place to start, I think. Don't forget to consider bankmons - Omastar gets Earth power, for example.

so overheat wrecks mamoswine. to be fair, they'll only overheat if they know that you're AV.

Let's see. To live an overheat... you need at least 168 special defense EVs on that spread to lower the odds to a 6.8% chance to KO. That's another 80~something that you'd probably have to take from attack, but I wouldn't bother.

There you have it! Let it be known that the set is fallible. It's up to the player to use all three of their games well and to wring out as much information as they can. I'd like to add that a typical mamo set can't live a heat wave anyway, so they'll more than likely go for that unless they KNOW you're assault vest. Otherwise, it's unnecessary overkill.

That's true that hitting mamo with the 100% accurate, high power Overheat is the safest option in theory. But I feel that in a practical situation where you have to contend with mamo's partner and the prospect of being neutered to a tame -2 will probably influence that decision in a battle.

If I may be completely honest, I've hardly ever used charizard Y. Your decision to run a slower bulkier one is definitely a consensus, a lot of players are doing just that. I've heard something to the effect of players EV'ing them to live jolly garchomp's rock slide, and I've seen a competition where a japanese fellow used 252 HP evs for some reason (it balked a malamar's rock slide, but malamar is pretty bad anyway so it's beside the point).

Having a quick play around in damage calc
124 HP / 108 Def is the minimum to live Jolly garchomp's rock slide at full HP. You can still keep all your special attack EVs.
However, that leaves you with 24 speed EVs which lets you tie with univested mega tyranitar and max base 60s (lol).

BUT with intimidate support:
I would type a spread here, but I was surprised - garchomp aint got shit. It can't KO even with 0 HP after an intimidate.

Over the course of the prelims, I'm sure you'll come to realise what pokemon you need to outspeed - and you can build the perfect set for the true competition when it rolls around!

Hey champ! Right now, I'd encourage all battles to take place over the 3DS, but since these are just prelim rounds to get everyone warmed up, it doesn't matter too terribly.

Just like >>18827416 has said, I expect everyone to have all the pokemon they want to use on their DS' by the time the prelims are done (thanks again for answering when I was gone, by the way!).

When does the real competition start? I haven't decided! This is because it mainly depends on when the prelims end, and that depends on how many rounds we have which depends on how many people fully register with Challonge... whew!
What I can tell you is that prelims will be going for a minimum five rounds which will be five weeks long unless everyone is super snappy and gets all their games done quick.

That being said, I'd ideally like to leave at at least a week before the end of the prelims and the start of the competition. No doubt all the prelims players will be workin on and improving their teams in their spare time, and hopefully, by the time the end of the competition rolls around, everyone knows what they want and can get that done quickly.

It's very strong in VGC 14 because Dark Void is allowed. In our little shindig we have here, I don't think it's as necessary, since without dark void this meta will probably be a lot more offensive.
The only real status you'll see is burn and para - if you're not terribly bothered or are prepared to play around these statuses, then don't worry about bringing safeguard.

Or, bring it to your first couple of games and change up your team later on. It's completely up to you.

Originally, I didn't expect as much interest as I've gotten. At first, it was just about ten or so people who were interested - I thought that, to generate more interest, I'd get a small competition going with people talking and discussing it, which would hopefully attract more people to the threads.
Instead, a lot of people have been trickling in from day 1 - we're now sitting at what will be a 33 man competition (assuming the last few stragglers don't join) - so it exceeded my expectations.

The second reason was that, while the small handful of us would be playing, I could gauge everyone's skill level and have like pairings in the big competition.
Now I'm wondering if 33 people can hold interest in this competition long enough to sit through six rounds of pokemon, let alone the prelims AND the actual event. Hopefully they do!

I did, actually, second paragraph. This way, I can gauge everyone's skill for the main competition. I'll be paying attention to scores, and I'll try and keep people with similar scores paired up in the next tournament, instead of random seeds where amatuer players get rekt and have no fun.

in the first mono tournament rounds lasted 4-5 days (5 for early ones, then later 4, and the last rounds were 3) and that worked out pretty well. The second one had each round at a week and it just dragged on way too much

Two days would be sweeeet. Except, there are 33 people to co-ordinate, 33 people with lives and jobs and schedules and clashing time zones. I really can't do less than a week but I understand wholeheartedly.

What I'm going to do is start the next round if everyone finishes on time. But unfortunately, I can't give less than a week.
If you're itching to play, why not ask in these threads? You can sometimes find someone to play here and it's good practise for the competition.

Hmmm. In retrospect, I wish I could have thought of a way to have people matched up against two opponents every week. I'd probably have to do the entire tournament bracket manually by hand, though. Maybe I could do that! What does everyone think? Two opponents every week, yay or nay?

Not quite sure what you're saying here - two people will have to co-ordinate times between themselves when they're paired up anyway.

I wouldn't be able to put that into the bracket, since it's technically not true swiss format. I'd probably just check the scores, make similar/like pairings then put those up manually. I'll wait until the competition starts and put that proposition into my next e-mail, which should be coming soon! Only two hours until I finalise the bracket.

Actually, item clause is probably my favourite part of flat rules - since it makes best of 3 an information war. Was that rotom holding Sitrus berry? Was that Garchomp holding the lum? If so, I can burn his mamoswine, I'll bring Jellicent to this one...

Prankster safeguard is pretty good against dark void but since that's not here then I don't see it making a huge impact. Just slap a lum on something you don't want burned if you're that worried about it.
