A canon is a principle by which something is judged i.e the non-aggression principle is a canon, science is a canon. Its other meaning is holy texts everyone agrees are valid, like the Bible.
"Canon" is not something some asshole virgin Jap made up in Tokyo. You could say "the creator's version of events is always right", but that isn't a consistent principle because unreliable narrators exist.
