Much, much smaller filesize.
Allows for more than 256 colors, unlike GIFs
Fuckhuge resolution if need be
Can even play sound if moot enabled it

They were installed on 4chan entirely yesterday and I believe /g/ was testing it a few days prior.

But the file in general has been around for 3 or 4 years, maybe. It's relatively new.

They're still kinda useful for silly/stupid 2 second animations, I guess.

Though now it's inexcusable if anyone uploads a Pokemon clip or whatever not as WebM.
