The best part about the XL is the quality of it. They fixed a lot of problems with original like the start/home/select buttons, the 3D slider, and the stupid glossy finish to name a few. But to me it's just too big. It's like carrying around a netbook or something, it won't fit in any of my non cargo shorts pockets. I'm also not a fan of the screen. Ignoring the PPI issue, it looks a lot more washed out than the original.
If they made a 3DS with the same quality of the XL and was the size of the original I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
