Yah, currently sitting at number 5 on the ladder. At the moment I'm finding Tornadus a real powerhouse. I'm running a special set rather than the more traditional Defiant Defog bait one and have found it far more effective. Traditional counters Rhyperior find themselves getting destroyed by Grass Knot and the rarae Fire-type coverage that Heat Wave provides is hella useful against shit like Escavlier. U-turn is always nice for muhmentum. That replay doesn't really show it since I was facing stall but it sure is a terror.

As usual, ask me dubs or RU stuff :3

/cpg/ I've been debating into getting into competitive battling for the last half a year or so. I've always been intimidated by it for whatever reason though. I know there's nothing to really be scared of, it's just a game right? I just can't force myself into trying to learn the meta outside of reading analysis of Pokemon and watching replays though. Synergy feels like it's a topic that I can't even begin to approach due to a lack of knowledge. Help, where do I start, should I just put my favorite Pokemon together and ramble into something decent by luck, etc?

Doesn't help that I have a crippling anxiety disorder where competition with other people just makes me shut down with fear.

go to the tournaments room on pokemon showdown imo. the players arent that good in that room, like just average ladder players. everytime you win tournaments, even small ones it helps build your confidence and theres a few skilled players that come in every night to play too that you can learn from. a cool thing about that rom is that all of the finals are posted in the chat so if you want to see the better players of the room play you can just click on that. most of the mods of that room are cunts though

firstly, mega gengar is one of the worst offensive megas in vgc 14. it's literally good for nothing except perish trapping. if you want a special attacking mon, mega lucaridoge is easily much better, getting easy OH/2HKOs on much of the meta with neutral hits. Soften them up with burn and sandstorm and you've got OHKO's all round.

lefties is shit on aegislash if you don't have sub. run weakness policy or something in its place.

rotom has a disgusting EV spread. work on that. make sure you can survive adamant mawile's play rough and modest charizard's solar beam. my advice - drop most your spatk evs and some of your HP evs. check cybertrons rotom video for a good spread.

greninja is hardly seen in this format for good reason. one, scarfmence will eat you, two mat block only works if the other guy doesn't know you have it, but greninja doesn't have the survivability to make that kind of bluff. and mat block is shit because talonflame exists.

finally, garchomp and t-tar. garchomp is standard for a reason, that's okay. t-tar is alright but you're missing crucial support for him. if you want to make a dragon dance set work, you better have answers to all the intimidate and status in this format, and you have none of either, so you're better off just dropping it and running something brainless that needs no support instead, like mega kang or something.

I'm new to VGC and I just wanted to make a decent team with MegaTTar since it's one of my favourite megas. I added Gengar because I liked Greninja support (I didn't know it was that bad) and Gengar seemed like a good partner.

The Rotom is copied from an article but I'm ok with changing it's EVs. I'll also put WP on Aegislash.

Could you recommend me other good partners for TTar? Or may I just drop it and start again?

The metagame has literally nothing to do with Smogon, Smogon's metagames, Smogon's banlists, Smogon's clauses or anything else in any way related to Smogon. It's entirely different in every way.

Tar gets 1hko on standard Ferrothorn and Chomp, sets up sneaky pebbles and THE HOT WIND BLOWING JAGGED LINES ACROSS THE SAND. Pursuit frail things.

+0 Scolipede outspeeds +0 Rotom-W, +1 Scolipede outspeeds +1 Rotom-W. Set was shamelessly ripped from Smogon. Hopes to pass subs to Chomp without dancing sometimes, so that Chomp can scare things off and abuse sand support asap, while still being able to dance if necessary.

Thundurus has Prankster Taunt and Twaves offensive threats with MAGNETIC FORCE, JACK. NATURE'S FORCE to give the other guys more breathing room. If the enemy hits through a taunt or twave, Thundurus switches out and something else gets to set up (ideally subs) due to easy prediction and/or parahax. Also taunts and zaps defoggers.

Aegislash is FUCKIN INVINCIBLE and is a good switchin for Thundurus who got pushed out by Foul Play, since it doesn't break his subs in shield form. Toxic puts a timer on bulky things and Aegislash overall provides a nice answer to priority users who lack boosting and status moves, and most other offense.

Excadrill is a spinner and Rotom bait, as players will assume it to run Sand Rush or Force after seeing a sand team. Jolly is to outspeed even max speed timid Rotoms lacking a scarf, while a speed boost from Scolipede will let it beat scarfs, and Life Orb guarantees kills even on somewhat physically bulky ones. Iron Head wrecks fairies who might attempt to stop Chomp's rampage.

Megachomp is the big man on campus. Speed lets him beat base 130s and scarf base 70s after a speed boost, HP and defense let him survive an Adamant Life Orb Mamoswine's Ice Shard if hazards are gone as well as letting him dance a bit more easily against walls and such, and the attack EVs let Outrage kill 252/252+ Slowbro 100% of the time after Sneaky Pebbles. Sand Force just makes the numbers bigger, and he might be able to dodge a move while setting up his own SD before going mega.

Looking at it a bit more, I feel like Eject Button might not be the best for Thundurus, since it means Smogonburd can push him out with its BB spam and almost guarantee that he wont live through another, and the only good answer I have to will-o-wisp Smogonburd seems to be Twaving it and landing a rock move from Excadrill or Chomp.

Because I skipped Terminus Cave and I'm far too lazy to go back for the Shadow Ball TM.

Also, Hex still hits harder than off-stab Gleam against neutral targets, and it could work well with a status spreader (though running a sub sweeping set means I can't run WOW with it).

Totally going to try WoW/Hex Cofagrigus once I get around to making my trick room team though; currently breeding about a million Cottonees trying to get a perfect and hocking them off on the GTS to complete my dex. though I may ask to have a cofag genned because Role Play is a tutor move and fuck trying to trade for one; shit was cash in doubles.

Mamo's HP and defenses are there for max balk. It survived a Charizard Y's Solarbeam with just 2%, but I haven't really done enough calcs to solidify its spread. The Attack is for getting the OHKO on standard Garchomp 100%, thanks to the Life Orb. Speed is for getting the creep on other Mamo's and 0 speed Rotoms.

Mawile's HP and Sp. Def EVs are to survive a +2 252 Xerneas's HP Fire 100% of the time. The Attack is for getting the OHKO on standard Xerneas, Yveltal, and Mega-Mewtwo Y. The Speed is for outrunning 0 Spd Adamant Aegislash to get the Sucker Punch off.

Rotom-H is pretty straightforward. Max defensive balk with just a little speed for going before... something. I honestly don't remember what it was supposed to do.

Sylveon is there for a nice mix of bulky wish support and offensive. Moonblast usually 3HKOs the Rotom-Washes I face. The 4 Sp. Def and Speed are there just because.

Venusaur I kind of threw together pretty quickly. I didn't do many calcs for threats, so that's just laziness on my part.

Mega Gyarados is 3HKO'd by 4 Sp. Atk Rotom-whatthefuckever with that HP, and can usually get the KO on defensive sets with EQ after one DD. I may adjust speed and attack to ensure a KO, though.

4 def and 4 SpD on mawile and sylveon seem pointless

even with thick fat, I'm not sure that solarbeams from Yzard are something to be worried about over fire blast

I think the notation for modest xerneas after geomancy is +2 252+ but you didnt say that, so you should make sure it survives modest

xerneas who run focus blast over hp fire get an extra spA point, prepare for them

is 0 speed adamant aegislash an actual thing?

The reason for the 4 EVs is because at level 50 (which is what the April Friendly sets everything to), putting the 4 into those stats raises it one point. With the other stats, adding 8 EVs would be needed to raise it another point, so I decided to put them where they could be used.

Fire Blasts are definitely something to fear in the sun, but I've noticed people using Flamethrower more. Maybe I'm just fighting scrubs

You make a good point with Xerneas. Fixing that

And believe it or not, I've seen it more than once. I thought -Speed natures were most common, which is why I didn't bother in the first place.

How do I git gud at VGC?

I've been looking at some stuff on nuggetbridge but I can't find the sort of stuff I need. All of their "beginner" articles are on stuff like "what are EVs" which I already know about.

I only have experience with singles and would like to give doubles a shot, and since smogdubs doesn't have a very big base I might as well try VGC.

I know about stuff like why everything needs protect, what follow me/rage powder are for, wide/quick guard, etc, but right now I'm stuck on the teambuilding.

There doesn't really seem to be much consistancy.

Besides obvious things like dedicated weather/TR teams, are there any articles or anything on just how to know what pairs well with something else?

tl;dr I've played a bunch of singles but want to get into VGC but don't know anything about how to put together a good team and knowing what synergises with what

VGC isn't really about team synergy, but rather about having a lot of strong two 'mon cores.

Start out with anything. Add something that combos well with it. Add anything that forms a workable core with your first two Pokemon. Try to have as many good cores as possible and add some glue if you need to.

That's pretty much how you build good stuffs. Yes, chances are your team will more or less identical to any generic threat list/ ranking. That just means you're doing it right.

Try not to think too much about the overall synergy, win conditions or game plan of your team and instead pay closer attention to each individual turn and the matchups it faces you with.

Also, on the ToTT, I started RU last night, in my usual manner of throwing together some favorites and other random shit that looked good and tweaking it until it works. Surprisingly, it's been working well: I've only lost one match so far (even if I am still fighting scrubs)

I already fixed some obviously derpy early-morning decisions Eelektross had rock slide instead of TPunch, Escav had Fell Stinger instead of Knock Off and I forgot to lower Eelektross' speed, but I think there are other areas that I can improve.

Most of the roles should be pretty obvious, but the least used moves are currently Tailwind (it was for when TR isn't up) and Spikes (Maractus wound up being a clutch revenge killer and water check, since I typically lead with Cofagrigus). Yache Berry also lets Altaria survive Feraligatr's Ice Punch.

Reuniclus is female only because I was using this slot for a different team before and there was a vespiquen there

A small profile of targets though important. Iron Head is really only useful for MEga Venu though its a decent move otherwise.

Is swift swim spam viable this gen? I feel like it hasn't been explored too much. 8 turns with politoed is more than you think. Back at the peak of weather wars in gen 5, keeping your weather up for 8 turns was a miracle. And swift swim obviously wasn't allowed.

Yeah I made that team in about 3 seconds just to test it out. Ferro and Bravest Bird seem like the biggest and definite problems. Venu is also one if Tornadus is gone. Ferrothorn has to be wittled done, but focus miss on everything helps. Never seen Suicune outside of Showderp, or Vaporeon outside of baton pass. Jellicent seems like a huge threat but with Keldeo usage still moderate, I haven't seen it in a long time.

I just use Torn-T's Hurricane (a 2HKO with rocks) and Focus Blast on Ludicolo and Mega Ampharos. Ferrothorn has no reliable recovery, so with good prediction and offensive presence, it will get worn down eventually.

I still find it useful, though i used it poorly in that battle. You need all the high base power moves for guys like Kingdra and Ludicolo or it isn't worth it. Draco followed by Outrage isn't stopped by much that can also take water moves. Not sure what I would replace it with besides maybe DD. The fairy uprising is vastly overstated.

Only when it's already Mega, and as long as rocks are down, Char-Y can counter Politoed back. The bigger problem is for the rain sweepers because the moment Char-Y comes to revenge kill, it totally kills your momentum.

Azumarill is pretty good, but sort of compounds your Ferrothorn weakness. I personally use Mawile to get rid of the handful of stuff that's a full stop to both Kabutops and Kingdra. Yeah a lot of steel types are good in rain; Mawile is only weak to erfquake in rain, which makes it that much harder to check.

What kabutops set are you running there?
I'm debating between hone claws/SD + stone edge/Rock Slide, and Then the STAB options of aqua tail/Waterfall and aqua jet.
It also gets knock off which seems useful to fuck over things that try to switch in or to have a parting blow before rain runs out, but it's a bit of a 4mss situation

Rock Slide can work with a +2, but remember you're only using your other STAB when you're not spamming Waterfall and Aqua Jet, and water resists tend to be bulky.

I usually lead with kanga and klefki if the opponent has no intimidate leader and first set up safeguard to protect kanga from will-o-wisps and t-waves. Then i swagger my own kanga and unleash hell with a non-confused +2 sweeper.

I might get swap a yache berry with the scarf but sala's set is intended to outspeed garchomp and kill with the draco meteor or get a super fast and powerful rock slide off.

Follow Me/Rage Powder will draw all damage away from shuck.

Also Tropius with Growth is pretty impractical even in Sun as Leaf Storm will lower your Special Attack two levels. Giga Drain instead, maybe?

First priority is obviously HP. If you want a 100% physical tank, then Defense is the way to go. However, if you want something to deal with Special Fairies, then some SP.Def may not be a bad idea. However, even Mega Gard has a hard time KO Steelix, even with without SP.Def.

Finally found a team that comfortably leaves me in/close to top 100 range on showdown OU. I still think they should wipe the rankings more frequently. So many people make multiple screen names and just hog their spot in the list once they have a good rank that it feels kind of pointless to really try for a top spot.

Rest is trash except if you have a chesto berry, or Sleep Talk, or a cleric maybe. Lava Plume is the safer and better option. Magma Storm is useful for trapping some key threats, and Heatran can pull it off sometimes, but it's not really recommended. The 30% burn really helps.

A couple things

1) Don't listen to the fgts that tell you stickyweb/shuckle are necessarily bad as Sticky web can be very, very powerful and shuckle is the best at it, HOWEVER the team must be tailored to benefit from SW and keep it up. Your team does not as your own two fast pokemon dont benefit from sticky web all that much. Chomper still hates Latios/Latias and Thundurus regardless and Greninja is already sanic as fuck. So I do suggest dropping shrekle. Your team is also bad at keeping SW up due to yor walls letting opps defog easily but w/e.

2) U-turn on Greninja is ASS dont listen to people that tell you to use it. U-turn is basically only useful for hitting blissey/chansey and getting some chip damage but without offensive investment it does shit damage so you cant really use it effectively as a safe way to KO something and get out for free while all of Greninja's coverage moves help it a lot.

3) Life Orb > SPecs on Gren. Gren is really good against offensive teams as it has hte power to outspeed and OHKO a lot of thier pokes but specs wastes that as it locks you into a move and renders you easy to to check by something like Keldeo which should get OHKO'd by Life Orb Extrasensory (greninja is THAT strong)

4) Poison JAb has little use on Garchomp. EQ hits most fairies nearly as hard while Fire Blast can easily muscle past Skarmory. Ill admit Togekiss is a problem otherwise and you can keep Poison Jab if you feel strng about that.

Lum Berry on Garchomp is a bit weird but not bad. However a band or scarf is better. Greninja doesnt need specs so give it a life orb. Also, if I may suggest, give it shadow sneak to fuck over fighting types that want to mach punch it, like breloom and infernape.

wish without protect is basically non functional, Curse Ferro basically fails to function if the opponent has a will o wisp user or fire type, Donphan is basically inferior to Hippowdon in every single facet. Your Red Card + Sturdy gimmick works only if hazards arent up which, considering Donhpan is also your rapid spin user that is unlikely. Balloon Tran is usually fast, has Fire Blast > Lava Plume and Earth Power to bypass other Heatran.

Also Mega Aerodactly is already super fucking fast it prefers the power Adamant confers.

Donphan without Earthquake can't force any switches once the opponent knows your set. I'm not sure what you're accomplishing with your Ferrothorn. What does it check/counter? Aeorodactyl is not that much of a hard hitter all things considered. Its coverage moves aren't all that good.

Skarmory does the same job your Ferrothorn does, only with better support moves and recovery.

If you want a fast attacker, you might want to try Talonflame. Either CB or Swords Dance set.

Tect / Seeds / Whip / Gyro Ball is a good set and I think it suits this anon's team well enough. If anything I would replace DOnhpan with Hippowdon forming a strng Sylveon / Ferrothorn / Hippowdon defensive core, then finish it off with 3 strong offensive pokes.

More or less. Slyvie isn't bad but if Dark types do bug you, maybe you should put it in a more offensive position. Chansey for more defense, but it gets fucked when it gets knock off. I would suggest Snorlax if UU, but RestTalk isn't exactly reliable.

I threw this team together, and iplayed with it for a while. It's based around the sticky web, and it works out okay mostly. But it gets destroyed by ice, water, rock, fire and ground. What should I do to mix it up?

I'll probably drop the Altaria, since Healbell really isn't that useful on a team full of sweepers, and he never gets the fucking para hax anyway.

My team is especially weak to ground, rock, ice and water. Doesn't need to be a cleric, but something that can be switched in when in need. If necessary I can change more than one poke (I very mucht think that it is necessary.)

Evolite Chansey or Blissey. Granted weakness to Fight types but Emo Burd rekts fight types save for Terrakion, provided no pointy pebbles. Sadly Terrakion has Stone Miss, is faster with fully invested in Speed EVs, and will survive a CC. However, Sticky Web will help NidoKing and emo burd to take down Rock Musketeer.

Would running garchomp this late in the game be good? If i do run one, should i breed for rough skin or sand veil, i doubt it learns sandstorm and ttar might help its sand veil but dont think they work together well as they did in black 2

Either the math on Showdown is wrong or EVs don't add points until the 8th point rather than the 4th.
Either way it's likely all of my EV spreads aren't optimal for level 50s after this realization.. why the fuck does Smogon use level 100s? There hasn't been level 100 battles in fucking years
