Well, you're objectively wrong, but that's okay.

Sceptile carries off the leaf-tailed gecko/velociraptor thing much better, the large thick tail balances it for running flat out. Grovyle by comparison looks awkward with its goofy ass-plumage and is far less suited for the "speedy lizard" role. Thus, being as it's more appropriate, Sceptile's design is objectively stronger. I mean, I felt the same way you did when I first saw his awful gen 3 sprite all those years ago, but thinking about it even briefly reveals the superiority of Sceptile's design.

Sceptile is a dilophosaurus. Grovyle is a velociraptor.

It looks much more sleek with none of that yellow ball seed nonsense. Far better for racing through the forest to do so.

While I'd love to see Sceptile in SSB, and it makes sense if Hoenn remakes were coming, just Greninja & Charizard in SSB4 does make sense because in X/Y you get a Kalos starter and a Kanto starter in-game. Hoenn fanboys going crazy with screams of "HOENN CONFIRMED!!!" is likely a reason he might not have been in this Direct, if he's in the game at all. GameFreak knew the frenzy he would cause.

Personally I think that if they were going to reveal a Grass starter to compliment Charizard and Greninja then they would have shown it along with the other two. I believe it's fair to say that the Pokemon roster is filled.
