such as 3ds max
pretty sure maya does too

It's both. In many math an physics applications X is left/right, Y is Up/down, and Z is depth, because that keeps the 2D standard of X being left/right and Y being up/down. But once you are actually in a 3D environment it becomes kind of arbitrary. That's why it's so important to label your axies

Maya uses Y as up Z is depth but it can be changed to simplify importing to another pagkage/Engine

Zbrush also uses Z for depth

Blender uses Z for height Max too

Why cant we just use LHD instead of XYZ.
