Barry has the best team out of all your rivals, and while he's not a total asshole like earlier rivals, he's still smug enough that it's satisfying to beat him.

Maybe not the best word for it, but he always comes off as though he's 100% convinced that he's stronger than you. Even when he loses, he doesn't really change his opinion until much later in the game.

I really like Cheren's personality. It's a shame his team is so fucking awful. I thought it was pretty funny how he wishes he could use his old team for his Gym Leader battles in B2W2, because he would still be fitting for a first gym.

He starts of as a normal kid on his death bed and ends up being one of the most powerful trainers in all of hoenn. I also love how he surpasses your first rival.

He also had an awesome team and got all his badges in the time it took you to get two.

Is it just me, or did Silver's character completely change between Gen 2 and Gen 4? It's probably just because he's now canonically Giovanni's son. He was pretty much Shadow the Edgehog in Gen 2, but he's more rounded and understandable in HGSS.

Always one step ahead of you, he mocked you throughout the game and acted like an asshole. He even beat the Pokemon League before you. Kicking his ass for the last time and seeing him crumble in despair was one of the best feelings ever as a kid.

>Silver: 5/5
Another excellent rival. He fucking breaks into Elm's lab and steals his starter. He is genuinely evil and doesn't care about the well-being of his Pokemon. The only rival who is actually a villain instead of just being an annoying fuck.

>May/Brendan: 1/5
These guys don't even fully evolve their starter. They just give up and go work with their Pokedex. Complete jokes.

>Barry: 4/5
The best rival when it comes to power and team building. He has good Pokemon and some of the battles are very sudden, making him the most challenging rival. However, he loses one point because he doesn't have the real rival personality: he's just some hyperactive kid next door.

>Cheren: 2/5
Has no personality whatsoever and doesn't really feel like a rival. He has a decent team though, and thus is ahead of Brendan/May.

>Hugh: 2/5
WHERE'S MUH SISTER'S PURRLOIN!!?? Yeah, an angry kid in search of a stolen Pokemon. He has angst, but he's otherwise not very interesting or powerful rival.

>Calem/Serena: 1/5
I respect you as a friend :) They aren't even rivals anymore, they're just friends with pathetic teams who never have any chance against you. They event get the worst Mega, as if that would help them winning.

Both of them are motivated towards a cause, respect you, and grow during the game. Barry realizes that power is not the only thing to Pokemon, and Hue finds out that there's more than one side of any story, or team in this regard.

I just wish Tierno had a proper dance themed team. I'd even happily fight Shauna all day, but fuck Serena. The only thing on her team that's mildly inconvenient is that Fake Out Meowstic and even that's only annoying for the first turn.
