A large portion of the rest are acquired by taking down the previous 'mon with a super effective combo.
If you are having trouble getting high combos, pause buffer. By that I mean pause the game in-between each move you make so you can figure out your next one. It's extremely helpful when you first start playing and after a while, you no longer need it.
If you don't know how to pause, there is a small blue button on the lower right of the touch screen.
