I did this as a kid even though I started when the gen 2 games were out. I think R/B/Y were the only ones they had available at the store so I ended up playing the gens in the order they were released.

I played gen 1 but never got the chance to play gen 2. then gen 3 came out and I played it. then years later my friend told me gen 2 was good so I played my little brothers.

I agree that the Diamond, Pearl and Platinum series did bring a few interesting concepts to the games, the Underground was particularly great, and being able to get the Fossils incredibly early was also a great addition.
It was however one of the slowest games of the series aside from the first Gen.
