That means it is definitely not allowed - like it says in babby's 1st dubs clause, if it can't be bred, you can't use it.
I want the best team to be accessible to players without pokegen/pokebank which is why Gen 3 Tutor moves aren't allowed.

Protect and the likes got changed this gen, the second turn they'll have 33% of the accuracy they had before (so 100 -> 33 -> 11).
That whimsicott should have max speed.

It'd redirected but doesn't get the boost, IIRC.

I've only ever used it on Rhyperior (which doesn't get the boost anyway) and scarf Raichu (which doesn't have protect) so I'm not completely sure.

As the others said, the success rate of protect was reduced in this generation, but otherwise you're getting the reduction right. Beware of single target attacks to your Aegislash after using Wide Guard!
As for how you should invest in your whimsicott - what do you want to survive and how badly do you need your whimsicott to outspeed other pranskters?
I'll give you a couple of quick tips - firstly, 252 HP is the worst possible way put balk on your pokemon. You'll only reduce damage by marginal amounts - you need supporting investment in defensive stats. Secondly, never try to invest in your pokemon to do everything! For example, don't invest whimsicott to live talonflame's brave bird and outspeed pranksters on its own - you have a team which can help you. For example, EV your whimsicott so that you live after an intimidate. You'll need less EVs and it will be an easier time trying to EV.
As for other pranksters, why not pack taunt on another pokemon? That way, whimsii doesn't have to invest in speed, and you can protect while your partner taunts.
Keep your mind open for what your second pokemon can do.

Solar beam/heat wave/protect is almost staple on charizard. The last attack really depends on what set you're running and what you want to do with your Charzard. There are typically only two other attacks to fill the last spot, ancient power and heat wave. That's a banded berdie - nearly nothing lives banded talonflame. See if you can live LO talonflame, and if not, it's time to accept the fact that whimsicott shouldn't stay in on a talonflame, much the same way charizard shouldn't stay in on an un-intimidated garchomp.

Another option if you wanna keep the Fairy typing could be Aromatisse; Aroma Veil would make sure you get Trick Room off, it's fairly balky itself, and it gets some decent moves like Aromatherapy, Heal Pulse, Sweet Kiss, etc. It could also use Trick Room itself.

it gets quick, not wide guard, but it's notable that it's the only prankster that gets a __ guard, so instead of its normal +3 priority, it has +4. This mean it can block any and all fake outs regardless of speed, instead of only blocking slower fake outs like quick guard normally does (since both the guards and fake out are +3 priority)

That's not the error I'm talking about. It was when you had Smogonbird out instead of trying to put up my screen I should have made Espeon Protect. I fucking KNEW you were going to Bravest Bird but like a retard instead I tried to screen.

It should have gone Protect, Mawile mega, Sucker Punch. Then all I had to do was put up a screen next turn while Mawile M waited with punch to finish your bird. Either you attacked it into the punch, and died or you switch predicting a punch, either way screens would have gone up and Espeon would not have died then.

late reply but light clay espeon's screens came in clutch. they were in effect for the duration of all matches and they saved garchomp from a very crucial KO in game 2 that would have won me the game, the mawile died to an unlucky crit.

Rerunning calcs, it looks like 252/148+ is required to survive Modest CharY. Again though, it does very little damage back to CharY and has to give up a good deal of physical defense and speed creep against other Rotom-W.

you get 20 to speed creep things. it's very possible to take points out of either spectrum and just let your team-mate handle things too, every pokemon doesn't have to be a one man army.

Gud effort, but you had no chance of setting up TR turn one. Gyara was taunting your jelly.
Some quick advice
jelly isn't bulky anymore, aegislash, megazard Y, rotom all dent it really hard
your scrafty is too bulky. I fell into the same trap myself when i made a VGC team - I suggest maxing attack and distributing the other 252 into balk. if you can't make it work, run assault vest and factor intimidate in your calcs.
Abomasnow, Marowak, Escavalier, Rhyperior etc are all cool pokemon, but they get absolutely zero done outside of trick room. Abomasnow can Ice Shard at best, marowak is literally good for nothing other than its high attack power, lacking the bulk to take even strong neutral hits well.
Not enough defensive synergy on your team. You never really had safe switches to much other than jellicent > abomasnow on the giga drain.
Amoonguss walls your team

keep it up, keep practising.

if you want a good TR setter, aromatisse with safety goggles is great. Immune to taunt, spore, sleep powder, rage powder, encore, and dragon moves. Has a load of other support moves as well including heal pulse

i've personally tried oblivious slowbro and i have to admit that it really doesn't have as much staying power after TR is up. when it's on-field, it's guaranteed to get TR up, but it cannot be both bulky and offensive - it needs full investment toward either spectrum. you won't live standard benchmarks of charizard's solarbeam for example.

i think something like gardevoir is a strong TR supporter. firstly, it's not blatantly obviously TR like aromatisse. a lot of players run scarf/specs gardei which is a VGC threat. secondly, it can invest 252 in special attack and have enough to distribute to take special attacks no problem.
definitely superior in my experience.

Actually, you'd be surprised how well Scarfed Abomasnow works if used right. Can outspeed Garchomp with 100% accuracy Blizzards. Of course, you also really need to keep it away from fire and especially scarfed Salamence, but that's true to TR Abomasnow as well. Not the best pokemon ever, but it works a lot better than you'd think.

Garchomp has a pretty good amount of items it can run with success. Rocky Helmet, Sash, Life Orb, Lum, Band, Scarf, and Mega Chomp are all very viable.

I personally think that due to the massive damage or status azu will obtain in return it's less profitable than it seems. Mega Venusaur is the real death of Azumarill, and those moves won't do any better anyway. Then there's say amoonguss, where the damage by Ice Punch or Knock Off aren't enough to be worth the damage or status you'd get in return. By all means go ahead and try it though, I mean that's always best way to find out.

Basically no one runs Life Orb Aegislash, however you team do have a terrible weakness to it.
MegaMawile can be also a problem, but with MomentumDoge and Aegislash you should be able to do well.

If it had good bulk(like if mega blastoise got drizzle) then there would probably be a big rise in rain teams. If it was something a bit more frail then it'd probably be like Zard Y where it doesn't always use drizzle to support the team but it'll just nuke everything.

I'm not actually sure what would happen! I feel like we'd see a lot of manual rain users to catch opposing weather off guard. I remember people running Hail on Chansey in Gen 5 singles for that reason.

Anyhow, a quick update - bracket has been updated and we're waiting on two people. I've heard back from one pairing and the other two haven't said a word. Hopefully I won't have to drop anyone from the bracket, but we'll see how we go.

I only saw the first battle but there's 2 things 4x weak to rock, and 2 things that are weak to flying. It's a pretty good team i guess but it shouldn't be all that difficult to beat.

I personally encourage everyone to improve their teams between rounds which is why there's no team registration. This also helps our little metagame stay unpredictable.

That being said, you still shouldn't reveal your team, especially since round 1 winners will be paired together in round 2.

I prefer Sitrus Berry usually. Azumaril is way bulky so you can usually get another attack out of it with a Sitrus Berry, but Lum Berry does make its attacks pack even more of a wallop. It just feels strange to hurt yourself to boost a weaker move like Aqua Jet a bit. I'd certainly consider it though.

I would do the bracket by hand but I don't know how to generate swiss seeds or how round robin pairings work, and I definitely don't want double elim since i want everyone to play a few games to get ready for the eventual tourney.

I put thunder to counter rain teams, which are logically going to be a sand team's biggest nightmare.

Hell, I'm pretty sure thunder's even recommended for specs rotom anyways.

Don't listen to that silly anon! A big reason why I made teams change-able is exactly so that people can change it, just as you have here. I'm sure in the future, Luna will have learned his lesson and will bring Lightning Rod to a team with so many water weaknesses.

I've honestly been thinking about finding a Lightingrod 'mon for a long time, but I have no idea which would work best or who to replace, and I'd rather not bring a 'mon onto my team as a living ability and nothing else.

I am. I find trying to navigate the smogon forums irritating, so I typically end up just looking at B/W sets to get an idea of what I'm doing.

Nuggetbridge usually has better sets than smogon, regarding VCG, try there too.

Anyway, thunder against a rain team i usually usefull, but it'll leave you lacking a strong electric STAB outside rain, and rain, thanks to CharY, is not as common as it was in gen V, so thunder is very risky.

Also, don't megaevolve if you're using protect, you'll lose 10 points in speed for nothing

Can I suggest you an Amoongus?
Amoongus is pretty awesome in VCG, countering TR alone and supporting the team plentifully with Rage powder and Spore.

Rage powder would be pretty useful to your team, drawing away electric attack from you teammates.

I realized the problem with mega-volving after I did it, although it didn't mean much this battle.

I have discharge on Rotom right now, although I considered swapping it to thunderbolt so it can do extra damage. Haven't really decided yet.

Yo I was gonna e-mail you but I can just tell you here. Your team wasn't incredibly weak to electricity (just gyara and politoed iirc) but having just two electric-weak pokemon will be enough to encourage other players to bring electric coverage at team preview.

As for synergy, that's important too. Before we go into that, though, we should look at how your team stands at the moment.
Most notably, your politoed died in two hits every time and generally didn't get much done. If you are running a bulky spread, try Sitrus berry, as it will turn all 2HKOs into 3HKOs, giving you an extra turn.
As for the rest of your team, I actually didn't see very much of them, other than sub/wow on rotom.

We see a lot of electric/ground types. There's always the option to pick an electric type to abuse thunder, but if I were you I'd pick Manectric, since if you choose to mega evolve, it's intimidate ability gives you lot more durability. We saw another player in round 1 using a rain team who utilised Manectric and Gyarados in the rain - it put a lot of pressure onto the opponent's Rotom, who couldn't volt switch and had to manually switch out.
The double intimidate is also very strong too.

Just some options for you to consider. Of course, you only really need lightning rod for players trying to take advantage of an electricity weakness. If you know you can just play around that, then its fine - personally, I think that the fact that the rotom had thunder is moot, since even thunderbolt would have done enough damage at the end of that round.

I would personally carry thunderbolt.
Discharge is pretty weak even with specs, and you have the risk to paralyze your teammates, or even KO them.

It's more risky, but might pay off more in my team. Neither Chomp nor Excadrill, who I don't believe I've used is harmed by it, and spamming RockSlide/EQ and discharge could net 2HKO's (so 1-turn KO's) against both opposing pokemon.

I suppose it really comes down to the situation. I just need to decide which situations are more important.
