here's something im curious about:

how does /vp/ distribute the EVs? do you do calculations to achieve something specific or just do 252/252/4 in the important ones?

recently i started putting more thought into it and started putting specific distributions to achieve somethings

More specific spread to outpseed/survive/ko certain things when you go serious business.

Also horde flushing is way more effective than super training.

I'm a lazy smogon copy paste faggot, so I usually just go 252/252/4. You usually don't need to do too much calculating, unless you are looking to minimally outspeed specific threats, and I wish I knew how to do all that math, but I don't know where to start, or if I am that motivated

For sweepers / attackers:
max speed max atk/spatk always with +speed nature if I can, +atk/spatk nature if they can boost or scarf

For walls:
if higher HP than defenses: 252 in both defensive stats and 4 hp
if lower hp: 252def if it's a physical wall or really good special wall like milotic/sylveon. sometimes special walls get 252spdef just to shut out special attackers that much harder, and try to get another teammate with good defense

regardless of wall though, for hp try to hit these numbers with EV investment, to maximize lefties recovery:
304 320 336 352 368 384
400 416 432 448 464 480
496 512 528 544 560 576
592 608 624 640 656 672
688 704

for bulky attackers:
max hp max atk/spatk

thing is, evs work differently at level 50; these are for 100 mainly. but usually these suffice

sweepers like starmie need max speed and power or else they're pointless, but when I make weird sets that are supposed to receive 1 or 2 speed boost, I make sure they beat scarftchomp or scarf terrakion

Depends on the Pokemon and what role I'm using them for. Sometimes it's a-okay just to dump 252/252/4, other times you have to be a bit more specific. It's entirely up to what you need each Pokemon to do.

It ultimately depends on what poke you're making, here's my basics at least:

Example: bulky CM Cofagrigus

>Pokes speed is lower than base 80, no point in speed invesment unless they raise speed to sweep

Example: 251 is the magical number to outpace Tornadus-T after a single Dragon/Quiver Dance, the rest goes into the obvious 252 offense and ANY remaining towards bulk investment. No point in outpacing benchmarked pokes and having wasted EVs.

>Max HP is not always wise due to hazard damage, Lefties recovery, base stat placemant

Example: anything weak to Stealth Rock should always have an HP number that CANNOT be divided by 4/8/16 and the like

Simply put, every 4 EVs don't always equate to +1 to that specific stat at level 50. Best way to know is to use something like Showdown's teambuilder to see the stat numbers and determine up to how many EVs you really need for that stat.

meant to say it's because hitting yourself in confusion is based on attack, thus Special attackers will do less to themselves

It's more or less a rule of thumb that after the first 4 EVs in a stat, it's every 8 EVs for that stat to get 1 point added.

4 EV = 1 point in stat
12 EV = 2 points
20 EV = 3
and so on

Depends on the role and the moveset for that specific pokemon.
for example, my marill got a classic traetment of 252 atk/ 252 hp/ 4 def for double edge use, while my misdreavus got 252 spe/238 def/ 18 spdef to even her defances and make sure it can use substitute and pain split before the enemy, as well as giving it some bulk so after painsplitting the enemy low i can finish it off with shadow ball

it really depends on movesets.
ofc, you can always have the classic spe/atk for sweepers and def/hp for walls.

How do I use this to meet certain defensive benchmarks? E.g. I want to have a Wash Rotom that always survives Charizard's Solar Beam and Mega Mawile's Play Rough while being 3HKO'd by Azumarill's Play Rough (holding a Sitrus).

Yeah Rotom-W is shitty at that hit without going full investment or a ballsy take at Assault Vest

Mawile however:

VS

So as long as regular Intimidate Mawile comes in on it you'll be more than fine to go full HP&Attack

It was Rotom that was supposed to survive hits from all those. 2HKO by CharY, 2HKO by Mawile, 3HKO by Azumarill. That was the target.

I came up with 252 HP / 92 Def / 100 SpA / 36 SpD / 28 Spe, but that was shit to calc and might not be optimal.

I only manage to get overall bulk from that Pokestudio thing, but I have no idea how to meet targets with it.

That damage calculator on the other hand is a bit awkward to deal with, and I found that it does bogus calcs for some moves. It also fails to account for Sitrus Berry activation.

At least the one thing Pokestudio helps with is with the huge HP cases I listed. Tells me to buff both defenses with Wailord before HP. But that defense tier stuff seems iffy and based on gen IV
