I have the chance to get a japanese platinum for cheaper than an english one. Are there any differences between the two besides the language? (e.g. glitches, game mechanics, encounter rates)

you can't play the jap version on an ntsc ds. That's about it, as far as I know.

also i'm pretty sure you can change the lang to engrish too, so that should'nt be a problem.

As long as you stick to the original DS or the DS Lite, you should be able to. From the DSi on the systems are regional locked.

As far as the OP, the only JP exclusive glitches I know of were for the original DP versions.

The 3DS is also Region Free for DS games. My buddy has a copy of one of the japanese Super Robot Wars games and it runs fine on my 3DS.

My cousin can play his Japanese HeartGold on his American 3DS. He says the region-lock probably has to do with the cartridge as well.
