For example, when B/W came out, it could be considered a headcanon that Hilda/Hilbert captured Kyurem in the Post-Game, and this would have been a reasonable assumption UNTIL B2/W2 proved it impossible.
Another one is the thoery that May/Brendan captured the Hoenn Legendaries, which could have been considered possible, until Oak in HG/SS mentions that the Legends are wild, and in Johto.
Similarly, Oak in Pt. specifically mentions that the birds roaming have migrated from Kanto, so assuming that there weren't multiple birds in Kanto, Red never caught those birds.
Mewtwo is still in Cerulean Cave in HG/SS, so he never caught Mewtwo either.
Basically, it's all "up in the air" fan theories, speculation, and headcanons, until a future game proves something to be impossible.
This also means that player Gender is irrelevant too, with the exception of FR/LG, where only Red is canon, due to the fact that in both HG and SS, he is referred to as the Champion, not the girl.
