ToTT: Full BP is an awful degenerate strategy that should die, but BP by itself is too broad-reaching and too useful otherwise to blanket ban.

I would put a restriction on baton pass users to three per team. This would be enough to fully nerf BP as a strategy while keeping strats like quickpassing and pivoting viable, and the rule is simple enough to understand (it's like Semi-restricted Cards in YGO)

Last post on the previous thread so bumping my question.

ToTT: Banning BP outright is a mistake. I run Tail Glow + BP on Volbeat for lead, but that's the only 'mon I have with it and the rest of my team can very easily get by without the Tail Glow boost. A hard cap on the number of BPers is a better solution or just ban it with certain Pokemon.

Would anyone care to rate my RU team?

I really wish Altaria could run Wish, but I do like that it retains some offensive presence as a cleric; are there any better alternatives? Also, I'll be the first to admit that Cactusbro isn't terribly good, despite clitch bullet seeds/sucker punches occasionally bailing me out. What would be a good sixth member to compliment the others? A spinner or defogger would be kinda handy to deal with sneaky stones, though most of the team isn't really fazed by them, and Sticky Web actively helps me.

Ive had an adamant Garchomp set for a while but im starting to doubt this set, any of you have any current recommended sets? Nuggetbridge and pokemondb all are based on black 2 sand veil setups

For fucks sake. It's a legitimate strat.
It's not broken, it can be countered, it can be played around (unless you suck at teambuilding) and it's not insta-win by any means. It became a relevant strat somehow, but just like stall, hyper offense or every single other play style, you need to have a way to play around it now, because it's a relevant play style over the shitty gimmick it had always been.

Yeah the dude atthe top of the ladder uses BP, but his w/l is terrible. Just because a guy with loads of free time spams it it doesn't mean it should be banned.

It really can't, not unless you run exclusively HO with a handful of wallbreakers and sweepers (Lando-I, Thundurus, flyspam, screaming fairies) or obscure shit just for BP teams. Otherwise you just flat-out lose. There's really not much "playing around" something that fully controls the switch initiative and hogs the momentum while at the same time boosting defence to unkillable levels either.

The fact that Dennis could just grind his way to the top with this kind of team is still pretty goddamn ridiculous, especially with the shit-tonnes of missplays he makes.

I play stall and don't struggle much against it.
I haven't faced dennis, though, but it's still a non issue for me so far. Sometimes it can get tricky to face, but Baton Pass users still have to make plays in order to win most of the time.

I have tried Baton Pass too. It's rather overwhelming when you play it properly, but a lot of times I get donked or surprised by something and bp teams are so frail without one of their mons that if something goes wrong once it's pretty much fucked.

Then again people say bp played "properly" can't be beat, but the same could be said about most play styles. BP teams actually find themselves into a lot of 50/50s, mostly early in the game.

I mean were you playing his team? The thing about baton pass is that they pretty much all play the same. I see people copying AJ's stall teams and flopping hard with it, but anyone who just -follows a formula- with Dennis's team just gets to 1800 in no time.

Having tried baton pass, I can't think of any team style so BORING to play. It's all just so deterministic 90% of the time, and literally the only time you have occasion to make real predictions is when you're facing Taunt Thundurus or the like. Otherwise, you just boost defence and stall with Scolipede until stored power reaches 200 BP, then you win. A lot of the wins from a bp team are instant forfeits because why waste your time playing some team, that you know you'll lose to.

I have my own BP team but it's pretty much the same thing.
The people I've faced in the ladder usually have denis' team or zapdos over mime, but yeah it's formulaic as fuck most of the time, except when Smeargle is out.
But against good opponents, most have ways to deal with it without using niche shit, and sometimes you get Destiny Bonded or something weird like that out of fucking nowhere.

Maybe NP Thundy is, but I Taunted on Turn 2 against Scolipede, it had Mental Herb and dropped a sub on the same turn. Then BP out to Espeon, Sub takes the damage while it Calm Minds, then pretty much unbeatable.

Seriously people mention Thundy as a reliable counter but even he gets fucked hard by Mental Herb, and so many Scolipede are leading with that item now that the BP thread mentioned it so many times.

I tried taunt Thundurus too, and got Magic Bounced vs Smeargle, then Spored.
It was kinda dumb to let it get spored, but while it's not a 6-0 vs BP, you have a good adventage against it.
If anything I'd worry about Sylveon, who beats it one on one usually.

Btw Taunt NP Thundy is kinda really good vs BP and Stall, and it's a cool poke to use in general.

Also about Dbond and shit, it's not like it's a good answer or anything, but it's an example of random shit that sometimes surprises me when using BP. The last time it was a Sharpedo in the lower ladder, but it almost costed me the game.

Do you have a set for NP and Taunt? I'm currently running TBolt, TWave, HP Flying, and Taunt. This set is necessary for priority paralyzing set-up sweepers if they get the best of my first counters, and Taunt is very useful outside of BP against stuff like Ferro Rotom and Pink Fuckers.

I'm open to hearing what kind of set you have with Taunt and NP. I just don't think I can lose HP Flying as it really helps me against Conk, whose a big threat to my team.

I'm breeding Froakie out the ass right now and I ran into a 5 IV female Dratini with its HA over wondertrade so I'm going to have a Dragonite too. I also found a nice Fletchling but I don't want to run Talonflame.

Any suggestions for a team with Greninja and Dragonite on it? I haven't been paying much attention to this gen.

Same poster, seems that the speed EVs guarantee an outspeed on Neutral 252 Hydreigon after 1 DD. I think it's worth it to run 252 speed instead just to speed tie neutral Scarf 252 Salamence. I guess they don't want to take the risk of losing the speed tie.

Rotom's EV spread, after some calcs, lives a Modest CharY Solarbeam and Adamant Mawile's Play Rough. Good spread for what I need.

I'm still wondering how the person who came up with Amoonguss' spread chose his values and whether there are any better options for EVs to run on it.

Hi /cpg/ guy with horrible crippling anxiety here. I finally managed to play some matches with some online friends of mine! They were all online players in generation 4, so, we all did gen 4 ou. They weren't the best players, and they were rusty, but, I felt really proud of myself to finally actually play on Showdown with other people. There were six of us, and through 13 matches I'd managed to win every single time. I know that's mostly because they were out of practice though, so I'm not trying to brag, but, I'm just happy I finally took my first step to playing regularly I hope.

I know it's most likely not a good team, and it's full of holes, but, it's a learning experience I hope. Please leave comments or blow it wide open, the more I learn the better. I also realize some of my choices aren't the best. I know Infernape does a much better job in Generation 4 as a wall breaker, I just wanted to use kicken mcnuggets.

Why do people think using a team centered around Quagshit and Haze uses is going to counter baton pass, and complain about it being OP when it doesnt work?

You're trying to beat a team built to prevent itself from being countered by a specific niche tactic, by using a niche tactic thats only good at countering the thing you're trying to counter which is built to stop counters by the very thing ... ad infinitum.

counter Baton Pass by sweeping them with Life Orb breloom or Cloyster or Mirror Coat or Dragonite or anything actually good at killing things.
Using Haze only adds about 25 turns to the turn counter while achieving zero damage.
Clear Smog at least hits Sylveon SE

Talonflame is one of the main enemies to BP. My favorite variant is the Taunt one.
However, a big number of BP teams run Zapdos for that reason. Talonflame is basically a free sub for it.

But yeah people make BP more than what it actually is. It used to not be relevant, so you didn't need to be prepared vs it, but once people get used to it, it'll just be another strat.

I've found malamar to be a good way to counter these teams. Especially ones with ingrain. Topsy Turvy when it's apparent they don't expect and go to their Espeon. And if they have ingrain they'll be trapped with all of the drops

Its a great move. It gets around obvious protects/switches if the opponent has a bulky electric or Aegislash (who cannot stand in on Flare Blitz, with or without the boost, even in sheild forme its risking tremendous damage)

That's basically two Calm Minds and then pass to Sylveon. It doesn't accomplish much, but it can kinda be a pain in the butt for BP sometimes I guess.

On the topic of setting rocks vs BP, that's probably not the best idea ever. For one, they might go to Espeon, screwing you pretty bad and winning free turns. It's also a free turn versus a strat you shouldn't be giving free turns, and it accomplishes very little most of the time. Smeargle may also bounce them or simply Dark Void you. There aren't many reasons to set rocks up most of the time.

Life Orb is a terrible item on Talonflame, and Sash isn't a good item outside of suicide leads and Alakazam most of the time.
Talonflame is a rather subpar sweeper but an exceptional revenge killer, that's why you use Choice Band. You need the instant power to revenge kill effectively.
SD, Bulk Up and support Talonflame sets are fine too, it's kind of a versatile pokemon regardless of it's stats and rather limited movepool, but CB is the best set overall.

Also Zapdos in BP is always going to be bulky, so it's not going to kill a Zapdos most of the time.

Talonflame isnt ALWAYS a set-up sweeper, but its damage output is pretty lackluster without a buff; Of course, getting that buff is often harder than sweeping without it, so you have to know when to make the move

I went with hasty so it could use Flare Blitz on Special Walls. Coverage looks good enough with Fire, Grass, and Dragon to me, and I was planning to use this for the April Friendlies.

Luckily I got this spread on a female, so breeding more wouldn't be a problem. But because it is a rare female I'd kind of like to settle for it. That being said, are there any Kalos mons I really have to worry about for Special walling? Only thing I can think of is Florges, but I'm already planning on bringing Scizor as an alternative Mega since it's 3v3 anyway.

I could try breeding for 31/31/x/31/31/31, but it likely won't be female ;__;

Bug Bite is straight-up better than X-scissor on Scizor.
Ampharos is just bad without its mega, if you want an electric type to slap specs on just run

Mat Block is a terrible gimmick that only works if you outspeed (and with fucking MODEST on Greninja you'll actually be outsped by a good chunk of stuff)

Arcanine's WoW for Close Combat or Wild Charge - you've already got 2 WoWs in team, and it's better if Arcanine's got more coverage
Greninja's Extrasensory or Dark Pulse for Grass Knot - Grass coverage is sometimes extremely useful
Heracross' Adamant for Jolly - if you're going full speed on Heracross, then go full speed. It's got enough attack to let the nature boost speed, which could be very useful for a slow mon like Hera

I'd like to add that breloom managed to trick people into believing it was a poison type thanks to poison heal, so he used to be our physical attacker (no really) but then i decided to go all poison just for fun's sake.

also is there even a viable poison cleric?

I've got me a 5 IV special, timid, sheer force Nidoking here looking for opinions on movesets and EV spreads to run with it. I'm thinking LO with Earth Power, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Fire Blast. I could also use Focus Blast in place of something and was thinking Sludge Wave could be a possibility because of faggot ass fairies not sure if it's worth it though to have double STABs or to lose EP for SW. I guess the EV spread would be a general 252 Spa 252 Spe 4 SpD.

Drop Fire Blast, and go with either Focus Blast (to hit Blissey for 2x) or Sludge Wave for Fairy Coverage. Earth Power, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt are all good to go.

252 Sp. Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HP

Definitely go with LO, since Sheer Force cancels LO recoil.

Essentially a free 60% boost (or 110% boost with STAB) with his almost unrivaled type coverage.

It's usually run with a bulky defog set, either specially or physically defensive, like TBolt / Defog / Roost / Heat wave or HP ice or Toxic or something. As purely offensive mon, Thundurus(-T) kinda does the job better because more speed and NP access and the ability to go mixed.

I'd say Ice beam, you hit Flygon on the switch, you can 2HKO specially defensive Hippo and you can kill Gligar if you stumble upon one. Flamethrower on the other hand would be for uh Bronzong and ice types (which are practically nonexistant in UU).

Skarmbliss, regenerator cores, that fairy flower + mega aggron in uu, there are a ton of decent defensive cores.
Offense: literally anything that is a lure + a sweeper that is walled by what the lure is supposed to take out, voltturn cores, etc

It's elo. Make a test alt and grind it to 1.7k or so. Maybe more, 1700 is kinda still elo hell.

You just need a shitload of battles before that. Like 70 or so. Then you'll get decent opponents. I just stick to one test alt, it's not worth to make multiple test alts with elo.

On cart you play to have fun on your own outside of a competitive enviroment. Asking for competitive advice for in-game use is dumb, since beating the AI or random players over wifi is completely different to actually playing on sims where you can find competent opponents (or at least opps that about match your skill) and a dedicated comunity.

First of all AV only multiplies SDef by 1.5. It also prevents you from using anything else that attacking moves. Also, look at your moves and ask yourself if you're really hitting anything for acceptable damage with it.

Ghost moves hit almost nothing Dark moves already hit, and using offensive moves that are not Foul play on Umbreon is a generally bad idea - its SpA maxes out at 240 with no way to boost it, you're not killing anything with that and lose the ability to wall things effectively. The standard set is 252HP/252+SpD/4Def, Foul play/Wish/Protect/Heal bell ot Toxic @Leftovers. That set uses Umbreon's defenses to their fullest potantial, being a rather effective special wall that can still do considerable damage with Foul play, which keeps it from being setup fodder. It also supports its team for all clericing needs. Wishprotect is a lot more reliable than Moonlight, which gets screwed by most weather and has low PP.
Espeon has terrible Atk, you're not hurting anything with Zen headbutt. 4 Atk Espeon Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Cryogonal: 150-177 (43.6 - 51.4%) -- this is one of the physically frailest mons around with base 30 Defense and you're not even 2HKOing it. The same thing applies to Jolteon, and Flareon to an extent. Glaceon might like Ice shard's priority but it's still questionable, Blizzard is bad without hail because 70 accuracy and Frost breath is basically a less accurate Ice beam that happens to go through defensive boosts, Ice beam > both of them. Body slam on Sylveon is also not doing much damage to anything apart from the moderately useful para chance, Hidden power fighting OHKOs Bisharp I guess but is pretty useless outside of that. Draining kiss' base power is kinda bad, and why are you using Moonblast Cute charm if you could have Pixilate Hyper voice, which is around 30% stronger. The type-boosting items also relatively little gain and you're usually better off with LO, a choice item, Lefties or something.
Nothing against eeveelution teams or playing for fun or something but don't try to use them in the competitive scene, it'll not end well. Also at least try them out before you post them.

There's a legality analysis before you battle on wifi. You can't just hack moves onto pokes or modify their IVs or give them incompatible moves, but anyone with a brain can hack proper pokes for wifi.

Rate my team. I'm currently 16-1 with this team so far in a bunch of random testing games. I know it's bottom of the ladder, but I really feel good about this one. The only loss was from me making a couple of bad plays and letting Baton Pass get by me. My current fear right now is the lack of fire moves. I get that this is the "Cost:Reward" system of the item but I mean logically speaking - How does a Pokemon consume weakness policy, or why does it go away upon use? How does it double your attack stats? is Cloyster viable tanking a Bullet punch to activate WP and then destroying worlds at +4 attack/sp atk/+2 speed?

Cloyster is not weak to steel. WP Cloyster is a terrible idea anyways.

Also it's pokemon, I aint explaining shit. They just do and you gotta accept it that way. It's kinda like religion, don't doubt it, just accept it.

It's like a "get out of jail free" card. When conditions are met, you use it and get the benefits. Then you can't use the card until you get it again

VGC player here. Aegislash in VGC typically run a substitute set - the inherent mindgames with aegislash often let it get up a substitute for free, where it can attack without worrying about being in blade form. Substitute Aegi completely walls standard mega mawile, i should add.

I was wondering if anyone's taken this idea to smogon singles - maybe, substitute on a predicted switch and aegi can get off a hit for free. There are also implications with weakness policy, as I believe it does activate if the attack hits your sub.

Just throwing that out there.

singles is a very funny place from a VGC player's perspective. Toxi-stalling is nearly unheard of, given how fast and aggressive Nintendo metagames are.

Hey /vp/, total competitive noob. Could you guys recommend a SUPER BASIC set of six pokemon to try the waters with and get a few battles in?

I was thinking Aegislash, Machamp, and Dragonite for three because those are three of my favorites in OU tier. Then again, thays 3 physical attackers. Feel free to call me dumb.
I know its bad but I really like clawitzer for a water sp atk

Use Scizor, Rotom-W, Heatran, Ferrothorn, Landorus-T, and Conkeldurr. They are generally the easiest pokemon to use and have decent synergy.

Ok. It's not hard, really. I'll make it even simpler for you.
Step 1: download pokegen and hack pokemon. Make sure they pass the legality check (protip: it's not hard) Step 2: If you can't send pokes from gen V to gen VI, ask someone from /vp/. Step 3: What is even step 3. Test your pokes or something.

I'm sure even a kid could hack pokemon properly.
