And even still, this guy got a twist to it. To justify Leafeons' brown paws, he gave them a more hoof-ish shape, and had them be theoretically made of a wood-ish material.
Vaporeon is not quite just a seal, but not quite just a dog either. The neck frills look pretty natural too.
Jolteon is literally just a yellow dog, and yet, to justify its spikes, he gave it porcupine-like quills. He even gave it a slightly more cheetah-like face and anatomy, given that it's supposed to be particularly fast.
Flareon, Eevee and Umbreon are canonically literally just dogs with powers and different colors, Umbreon looking a little bit more like a lycaon, and so they look like here. There's not much you can do with that.
The only two that I don't quite like are Glaceon and Espeon, and I don't really hate them either. Glaceon looks intentionally stupid because the guy is biased against it, or at least so I remember from the description. And Espeon, though it's just unpleasant to look at and doesn't even really match the canon look (for example it's missing the tufts of fur beneath the ears), it makes sense. It conveys the concept of it being a psychic type really well.
The guy makes a lot of shit art, don't get me wrong, but this is not bad, and most certainly not for the reasons you imply. Not in this case anyway.
