Hang in there, guys. First week was really tough for me, too. I think one night alone I had 8 matches of 2-3 battles each, or so... Try to limit yourself and keep an even pace. Doing this for hours with no break is a good way to wear yourself out.
I also really enjoyed trying out new team members every week.
If you hit a bad streak and lose like 3 matches or something, just let it roll off. Try to learn from your shortcomings and think of ways to beat the same strategy next time. Sometimes, barring stupid levels of hax, you just can't win, and that's not your fault. As a Normal gym, if I saw 2 or more non-mega Fighting-types, I knew my goose was probably cooked. It happens. Just put up the best fight you can manage.
I'll see you new recruits next week.

You've hands-down proven yourself worthy in the tourney.
Some mono teams just don't translate as powerfully to unrestricted battles. Also, you're using some really RNG-dependent tactics, and the odds have just started out not in your favor. The RNG should settle to an average over the long run, but when relying on RNG strats, you have to be prepared to see the raw end of that deal, just sucks it's been so statistically slanted against you today. Perhaps it was more in your favor during the tourney, which helped you earn your spot afterall?
Hope tomorrow goes better for you, but remember, you're a Gym Leader to give people a challenge so they can earn your badge, and that's what you're doing, so you're right on track. Every comment I've seen so far has been praise at how strong the leaders' teams are, to include yours. I don't think anyone believes any of the Gym Leaders' teams are easy, even if they were able to defeat said leader.

In the tournament, Nips was one of the strongest battlers and in the little mini double elimination tournament we held between the final 8 afterwards, he made it to the top 4
But in the gym format, he was consistently one of the leaders who lost the most frequently. Pretty much every team has good coverage for steels.

It also prevents people from using crazy long-shot RNG-based strategies over and over til the RNG happens to work out in their favor.
If you can't beat a Gym in three tries, your team needs to be reworked, plain and simple. This rule simply enforces this on people too dumb to realize that fact on their own.
