Do you have any 'mnemonics' like in pic related to help you remember?

I always remember bug/dark/ghost > psychic since they're all common fears that can mess with the mind.

Steel because Fae creatures, in lore, have an aversion to man-made objects, especially steel/cold iron. In a lot of RPGs, Fae creatures can only be damaged by a cold iron weapon.

As for poison, i've interpreted it as toxins/pollutants/manmade things in the same vein.

I just... do. Over the years the type effectiveness has basically just been ingrained in to my mind. "Oh, it's that type? Okay, so it's weak to this and that, but it resists this so I shouldn't use that..." If I had to actually make a type chart I'd probably forget some things, but oddly, I know it all as if it was innate.

There's only a few things I'm usually unsure of sometimes, things like how Rock does not resist Bug, but I usually do remember by thinking of specific match ups and Pokemon. So for Bug vs. Rock, I think of how U-turn is super effective against Tyranitar, since Bug is neutral on Rock and super-effective on Dark, with Tyranitar being both Rock and Dark.

So basically, I've got it pretty much memorized, but if I ever come up with blanks, I think of specific scenarios. I guess it also helps that I've been in and out of the competitive scene since Gen III, so I'd get used to battling a lot and seeing the different type match ups quite often.

I remember that Flying doesn't do shit against Rock and Ground because of the anime episode where Ash sends out Pidgeotto against Geodude and Brock laughs at him

I remember Flying beats Fighting by the time I swept Chuck with Noctowl

Flying beats Bug is obvious, Flying beats Grass I just think of leaves getting blown off. Flying type might as well be Wind type after all

Rock beats Flying and Fire because of the Charizard Stealth Rock jokes

Ghost beats Psychic because Ash spent two episodes getting a Haunter to beat Sabrina

Stuff like Ground beating Steel and Bug beating Dark and Psychic I remember just because of how little sense they make

Bug one doesn't really make sense, if it's hard to hit then that would be a higher evasion or miss rate but not weakened power, because in theory if you karate chop or drop kick a bug it probably will take a lot of damage from it

Most of the time they're easy to figure out but it's also good to memorize the weaknesses of some of the pokemon with weirder typings. Like how this motherfucker is only weak to ground, Scizor and other steel/bugs only weak to fire, and water/ground types like quagsire only weak to grass.

For me, the matchups that confused me as a kid were Bug resisting Dark and being SE vs Dark, and Bug and Fighting resisting each other. I know people have already said it's because they're too simple to be tricked and their exoskeletons are tough, but it goes deeper than that. Basically paraphrasing what someone once said in another thread:
If you look at it from a Japanese perspective, bugs (mostly beetles) are strongly associated with being the hero via Kamen Rider. Bugs resist and defeat Dark because the heroes must always crush evil. Bug and Fighting resist each other because, as fellow allies of Justice, they hold back when going against each other.
It's a pop culture reference that any Jap would easily get, but flies right over Westerners' heads.

Basically, it's a tokusatsu thing.

Poison is strong against Grass and Grass is weak to Poison because pouring harmful chemicals on plants will kill them/ pollution and the enviroment

Psychic is weak to Dark, Bug and Ghost because thats what people are afraid of, and fear messes with your mind.

Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting because you can't touch a ghost. But Normal is immune to ghost because normal people don't believe in ghosts.

Steel is immune to Poison because if you pour Poison on steel it will just slide off.

Everything in this game is about how good triumphs over evil. Fighting is SE against Dark. The gentle Psychic type is SE against the brute Fighting type. Fairy is SE against Dark, too.
But Ghost is SE against Psychic. See, Ghost isn't necessarily evil.
The same thing happens with Poison. Poison types aren't sneaky evil dudes that knock off your item or sucker punch you. They just happen to be able to secrete poisonous stuff.
Poison is like a corruption of the purity of Fairy, while not necessarily being evil. Like how Poison is SE against Grass, it is so too against Fairy.
Anyway that's how I see it.
About Steel being SE against Fairy, I have no fucking idea. Metal traps fairies? Idk.

I remember them by visualizing how they would interact. For example, water extinguishing a flame, water being electrified, fire melting steel, etc. Other, more abstract type interactions I guess I just remember based on their colors - like hot pink being good against purple (psychic vs. poison) and light pink being good against dark blue (fairy vs. dragon).
