Actually what they did was intercept the data a 3ds sends and receives when it communicates with the GTS servers.

They then had to take that data and figure out what the hell it all meant because it's all encrypted.

Then they had to figure out how to edit it, re-encrypt it and send it to a 3ds with out the 3ds catching on that it was faked data.

Not an easy feat. Not easy at all
