Well it's because the game just isn't balanced around singles. This is why there's so many different private metas like Smogon. The game is balanced around doubles. If it was just singles, that would leave out a ton of moves and strategies that are intended for doubles.
This is why Pokemon that are generally regarded as broken in the singles format, really aren't in the doubles format, because they were designed for a doubles centric metagame.
