The importance of placement relative to your opponent also adds a factor of uncertainty that is neither luck or skill. There's no inherent advantage to placing a mon on the left or the right. But if you guess wrong, you can be at a heavy disadvantage. Whereas guessing the leads in a doubles match benefits more strongly from skill. During the match, placement adds both advantages and disadvantages, but is pretty hard to control.
Also, triples lag terribly ingame, especially when weather is in play.
