Citron isn't a name, and Dent is laughably far from being a name. Yeah, they don't seem Japanese, but that's WHY they had to change them - because they're random words that everybody knows aren't names. If they'd been in Japanese, nobody who watches the dub would have known the difference. But because they used English words, they had to change them for the dub.

Okay, just because some guy from Mississippi is named "Dent" doesn't make it an actual name. A lot of people down there use random words as names. That doesn't make it right.
Seriously, though, it would have been crazy not to change his name. Someone who's going to be a main character in the anime can't have too absurd a name, it has to be something that at the least wouldn't make a new viewer go "WHAT did they say his name is?" Dent may have worked (poorly, still) if he was destined to show up for two episodes, but it's not viable for a main character. They need to go with something that most people would actually recognize as a name.

I mean, losing at first made sense because otherwise the travel would feel over, but after seeing that no matter how much you win you can always enter another tournament it makes sense for ash to actually win for once.
Not to mention that this season already feels quite different from the old ones. 6th time's the charm.

Sure, now everytime that Ash comes around he'll be "the current champion of the Kalos league" but he's usually called top 8 or whatever shit anyways. It's a change, but not an astronomical one, and it's not like he's forced to continue on as an E4 or anything after winning.
He's gotten pretty far before, I don't think it would be hard to have him win and then continue on to the next region, have him choke at the semifinals to a rival. Maybe even have rivals across generations that usually battle him at the league, the same way May's tournaments go.

He was originally meant to win the Indigo League, but the anime became popular, which resulted in the writers having to extended the anime pass the 25 episode mark. What was meant to be a victory in the Indigo League became a victory in the Orange Island League. The same could possibly be said about Hoenn too. What could have been a victory in that league ended up in a victory in the Battle Frontier. You can tell that Sinnoh's league was rushed since the promotional scans for that arc portrayed Tobias in a rather negative light. Instead, he ended becoming a plot device to get Ash out of Sinnoh ASAP. Unova was just bad writing, and possibly the Tsunami causing a lot of events to be rewritten. Assuming that Kalos' League won't be plagued by those issues, Ash has a shot at winning.

I don't know what was up with puss in boots or muh ubers, though. Hoenn might be like you said, trading that victory for the battle frontier; and I guess losing a semifinal to an eventual champion full of legendaries is quite the feat without actually making him win, so they can have their cake and eat it too.

But you GOT a lot of the more subtle hints later. It has become nothing other than some perverted pedo watch or shipping delusion. The one thing I will credit the original series for is having the most original content, along with Orange. After that, it became just going by the game locations and something rather formulaic happens. I do not believe this makes it better than later story arcs. It might have had better ideas, but they are mired by childish shenanigans. Later arcs are better in tone, but they get all samey and uninspired. I know these two things can easily be melded, but they are not good at doing that consistently. They have to make a plot that lasts for years, and they greatly suffer for it. I don't know why they feel like they have to make the anime last for the whole gen. It may have to do with the marketing department. In a way, I pity the writers of this show.
