Depends on if VGC or singles.

VGC: Yes, she is really fucking viable, you tend to pick either Gardevoir or M-Mawile for the Fairy part of the Fantasy core (sometimes both, with M-Mawile taking the steel slot instead of fairy). Most commonly run with Scarf, Specs or Sitrus.

In Singles, it really depends. Gardevoir can definitely be built around (most likely a scarf or megastone variant) but doesn't quite shine as much in singles competition.

Fantasy core is something that all the cool nips are running in VGC, it is basically a Dragon/Fairy/Steel core (nips like Garchomp/Salamence/Dragonite, M-Mawile/Gardevoir, Aegislash/M-Mawile most it seems). It is being slowly adopted in the west (faster here in ausfalia since we take more meta stuff from nips than we do from clappers, but still being adopted slowly by bongers and clappers) but it has already replaced FWG and fighting/psychic/bug as the main core in my local area as well as in Japan.

One amusing core I saw someone running at a local tourney was Charizard-X/Azumarill/Ferrothorn. FWG and Fantasy core in one neat package.

This is true, it is telling that fairies are part of the current strongest core in spite of most being terrible stat wise. Hell, AV Wigglytuff took out a regional. I don't happen to play Smogon Ubers and folks on Battle Spot clearly don't know how to play it, but Fairy-Arceus and Xerneas must be utterly disgusting to face when played well.

Yep, I'm not saying that they are unconquerable (just like the gen V dragons were almost all a victim of scarfoswine) but I am saying that it is a monstrous offensive and defensive type (although I feel that Ho-oh and the Great Wall of Lugia have both grown in usefulness again to cope with them). Simply put, the fact that AVtuff can take out a regionals, or that Aromatisse can be a first preference on trick room teams is telling of how good the type is, and how bad the pokemon it gets given to have to be to remain "balanced".

It's just ridiculous really, though. Adding a weakness to ghost or fire or something may help them becoming too big an issue down the road

It's funny because my favorite types are Ice and Steel. No, Dragon definitely needed a nerf, but aside from the SE on Dragons the Fairy type chart is ridiculous and everyone knows it, though I do appreciate the slight buff to Steel.
Also why the fuck did GF call the type Fairy when it's clearly more along the lines of Fae, which would actually make sense taking out dragons. At least the strong ones.

Ghost really doesn't need the buff right now, I would say take away the bug resistance and maybe add a weakness to one of the less used current types like Psychic or Rock (but that would probably rely on a change to pebbles for people to not complain, though GF might not care since pebbles are nothing in doubles).

Singles or doubles, mega or not?
Singles would be mega with Bold/Calm, Calm Mind, Hyper Voice/Moon Blast and Psychic/Psyshock/Wil-o-Wisp/Thundebolt/Shadow Ball (pick 2 of the 5).
Doubles is normally scarf with Psychic/Psyshock, Moonblast/Dazzling Gleam, Wil-o-wisp/tbolt/shadow ball/Energy Ball, Specs with the same (but without any of the status move options) or Sitrus with the same but often Protect as well.

generally I like bold more to get that mixed tank, it's not hard to make up for it with a CM. But I do feel like she works a lot better in doubles.

It is a ridiculous set of resistances and offensive STABs to work with, if you want the cookie cutter ones try Salamence/M-Mawile/Aegislash (double intimidate core with a special, physical and mixed damage source) and Garchomp/Gardevoir/Aegislash (same as above but with the special and physical sources reversed). Also, Azumarill, Dragonite, Scizor are quite popular, and even Haxorus, Aggron, Aromatisse and Hydreigon see some play.

Don't feel bad, Aggron is a very niche choice, you did go against the grain.

Two that I forgot to mention that go into the steel slot are Mega Lucario (on variants with Azumarill) and Bisharp (on variants that need the physical damage to come from the steel pokemon).

Also, I meant the type as a whole.
Poison is only good on grass and fairy, Before this gen Gengar would never have poison coverage because he doesn't need to.
Steel is good on Ice and Rock, a type that is objectively shit and an uncommon defending type. Steel coverage is only given to Scizor for bullet punch having both stab and technician.
