>>18907103I'll be honest, that's what I loved about BW's story too. Gen V's initial outing was supposed to feel like Gen I too, especially since no pre Gen V Pokemon were available before the postgame. Then having them change things up, with the villainous team arc reaching a climax after the Elite Four, that was pretty cool, right down to you catching the box Legendary to face N's box Legendary.
I think why the first BW games worked in this regard is that they not only did that, they did that in a pretty cool way, I think. It helped that you had the Gym Leaders be a part of the storyline too and you actually feel like they're actual characters with a role in Unova rather than just layabouts waiting in their Gym to face you.
i think what I liked the most about BW is that the story carried through all the way to the very end, to the point where your Champion battle was actually a postgame match and the final battle was against the villainous team leader... as opposed to say, the Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos games where it's like, okay, collect Gym Badges, occasionally clash with villainous team, catch Legendary and get things under control, get last badge, then you're done.

In the Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos games, they were, but they didn't give you much reason why outside of "villainous team leader is doing bad things with it, stop them", whereas Unova actually gave you a reason, it was to be a hero and all that jazz, and it was also part of the world building.
