If my autism has failed me and I don't already have a name in mind, I'll usually use a name of a character of whatever I'm watching on TV. Or ask a friend what its name should be. Got 'Rambo' the Absol and 'Bradley' the Espeon from it.

A lot of the time they get stuck with flower names that match their colors, or old-timey names because I think they're cute.

I give them all regular people names because they're easy to come up with, there's enough to last until they get to 1000 at least and it's fun to give supposedly intimidating monsters names like Craig or Paul.

Is usually come up with really bad puns. My female Luxray's name is "Cleozaptra" for example.

Or if a pokemon reminds me of a character. My Gengar is named "Cheshire" and my Levanny is named candeloro

But if I'm doing themed teams I try and think of names that involve said theme. Songs are also a big theme of mine to use for names.

One of the only rules I have is to only name shiny pokemon. Normal ones don't deserve it. I usually just go with something that sounds similar to the pokes name "charming" charizard "pudgy" pidgeot etc

Unfortunately I have been using Mythology for team themes since gen 3. Then again that was when I was 9 and I continued it off of tradition.

Other times I'll look up the Pokemon's origin and inspiration and base the name off of that. Especially Legendaries. Though sometimes I'll just name them something in Latin. (Nox the Umbreon was one from Colosseum)

I did do a team theme based off of famous artists and works of art. It had a Blastoise I named Leonardo (inb4ninjaturtles) and I kinda just went from there.

Stupid and/or not creative names: Shadow (Gengar), Luke (Lucario)

Only time I've done nicknames was for a nuzlocke. And all of those pokemon had MTG references. Tarmogoyf for venusaur, Kalitas for crobat, Isamaru for arcanine, and Wrexial for Gyarados are the ones I remember.

I think I also named the regis after Eldrazi Titans in my last run.

agree with real names, but I follow certain rules, if I give it a name of a person who I know, I try to ask him/her about I had a correct pick or not.

For example, I call my (first) regional birds Cristina if they're female, in this generation Charmander is called after a footballer, who has nearly my name (for not naming my little lizard after me).

Emerald - Just went with whatever works

I usually name my mons related to either something happening at the time I caught it, or a physical feature, or a play on their name.

Failing that, I make sounds until I find one adorable enough. I name all the pokemon I catch and all the pokemon I breed with the intent of use, and most of those I intend to trade away. I like to give legendaries really mundane names, however. I've got a Palkia named Steve.

I used to use a lot of things, usually a pun based on what they are or what power they have. This could either be a name that contains or sounds like the above, or I just outright choose something related to it and use it as a name. Now, I try to at least be a bit more original in how the pun relates, or try to make it sound like an actual name. Like Tephra, my female Typhlosion, or Valencia, my female Raichu.

I always assume people who nickname pokemon are either using a playthrough team or are bad at pokemon, for no other reason than after your pokemon hatches, you can't check its IV's until you fly to the judge.

I simply can't see people nicknaming their hatchlings they will release a minute later.

I've seen some cute nicknames, like a Lopunny named Madonna once, but I can't into nicknames.

I've got six teams worth of nicknames I could list for you, but to save time and typing, I'll just do it for my current Y team.

I only nickname pokes that I've had more than one of to differentiate between gens, so like I used to 'breed' butterfree in gen 1 and I had 2357937465985 caterpies and the original was Happy and they all had synonyms for Happy as their names (cheery, sunny etc.)
i was 7 ok

in gen 2 my obsession was eeveelutions so I bred a million eevees and my first was Dash, an espeon, and then they were all named motion verbs (skip, hover, roll, etc.)
i was 10 ok

now I name them if I had one in a past gen. and i want to differentiate between the original. my black2 team right now is
Rook >espeon
Rises >crobat
Sweater >ampharos
Asa >arcanine
Orville >azumarill
Virizion

I didn't name green hammerhead deer cause I've never used it before.

If I do nickname something - which I rarely do - I generally go for the first thing that I come up with which seems amusing to me.

In Y, I had "Meat Loaf" the Noivern, "It's a rock" the Forretress, "Boss Giygas" the Sylveon, "TurboFrog" the Greninja (Reference to a slightly obscure MtG deck) and probably some others that I forgot.

I rarely do nicknames, though, since I can only nickname the ones I breed myself and breeding that Naive Greninja with HP Fire took forever, even with the breeding improvements, and it isn't even in its neat shiny form. So meh, I mostly get cloned ones from trades because I'm lazy.

Of all of my six teams, I think only two Pokémon are named after mythological figures. Both were Fire-types, neither name is Greco-Roman, and I named them their names because I just flat-out couldn't think of anything else. I usually steer for more contemporary references, sometimes based off of actual people.

It's anything goes with me. The most common theme in my nicknaming is mythology, but sometimes I'll try to be funny like with pic related, or I'll use a corruption or portmaneau of something else. For instance, I named my female Hydreigon Sazhana, a combination of Sazandra (its Japanese name) and "hana" (flower).

I favour themes myself, or a pick a letter and name all my team something beginning with that letter.

So far I've used D, I, Z and S for LeafGreen, SoulSilver, Platinum and Black respectively. Emerald was herbs and spices, Diamond was constellations, Black2 was asteroids, Y was gemstones and now I've started White, I've gone with 'Solar System moons'.
