I was thinking of either designing an elephant kind of Pokemon, or a Fire/Grass type which would represent bush fires.

Any thoughts on this?
Personally, I think the Elephant Pokemon would be easy and fun to design, I just don't know where to start.

Sounds like a good idea, though if you wanted it to be anything but a starter then shy away from the whole 'on fire permanently' theme. Maybe look up images of smouldering embers like pic related, that looks like it could be a link to elephant skin

maybe replace the tusks with charred branches? Pick 3 or a maximum of 4 colors and stick with them the whole time. Distinguish different parts of the body with "big" shapes of a different color if you get what I mean.

I added some leaves to go with it, maybe this Pokemon's niche could be that it burns up the leaves that grow on its trunk-tusks to power up its fire attacks?

Think about the theme you want to give it.

You can either look at a forest fire as a force of nature which fertilizes replenishes and refreshes the too-dry environments which cause it, or as a destructive force which burns through creatures habitats, burning and killing indescriminantly.

The same goes for elephants, they've been used as beasts of burden and for war. They herbivorous and usually gentle, but a rampaging bull elephant is one of the most dangerous land creatures on the planet, there have been examples of young males killing for fun.

For two themes so polarized, a lot could go wrong in a good design. So before you give it traits such as burning leaves, think about why it burns them. Is it benevolent, paving way for new life? In that case you could have burnt-out dead wood tusks with new shoots sprouting through. If it's destructive you could reverse it, with live wood and leaves burning.

Then take it further with other major features of the elephant. Its ears could be used to fan the flames to spread them, or if you angle them differently on top of the head they could be used to shade them from harsh sunlight and bad weather.

You could even use the theme to actually make changes to the basic characteristics of the elephant, trunks are associated with water right? So maybe if it is an angry, violent Pokemon then give it a shorter trunk, it doesn't care about watering plants or putting out fires after all. If it is gentle then give it a longer trunk for watering plants and putting out fires which get out of control. A good pokemon always looks different to the animal it was based on after all.

Well, going along with the theme of the elephant being natural looking but also something that can be considerably violent or dangerous appearing as well, so I took a look towards the idea of the elephant being tribalistic themed.

People often associate tribal humans as being savage, violent, and brutal people who do nothing but hunt foreigners; but the truth is quite the opposite.
While they might look alien and savage, they're the most in-tune with nature humans that exist. If they kill a creature, they don't let a single part of it go to waste. They respect that there's a cycle that needs to be held in order for nature to continue peacefully.

To reflect that, I've added a little bit of ritualistic paint and a leafy crown to the rough doodle. It looks like it has had some involvement with humans, hence why it has some accessories.

It looks good as a design, but I'm not sure if I'm making it look natural enough. While it does use a very neutral, warm shade of brown as its base, there's a lot of conflict going on with the warm green and the warm red. In terms of colour choice, I think I've definitely nailed down that emotion of violent but for a natural cause.

Sounds like it has potential. Accessories can be fine, pokemon often does the whole "humans got it from this pokemon to begin with" spiel. As long as it works with the pokemon design.

Maybe you could use the idea of "killing and using every part" idea as well, what if all leafy appendages burst into flames when it really needs extra power in a battle for as long as it takes for them all to burn away, but then it has to wait for them to grow back completely before it can do it again?

The less leaves it has, the stronger its fire type moves would be.

There'd be something like 4 stages.

1)Many leaves. 50% bonus damage to grass type moves.
2)Some leaves. 25% bonus damage to grass type moves.
3)Not many leaves, some are charred a bit. 25% bonus damage to grass type moves.
4) No leaves, smoke billows out of the trunk tusks. 50% bonus damage to grass type moves.

I really like that actually, the feet are a good place to add something like that as they're large and plain otherwise. Guess you have to move on to overall coloring now, experiment with two-color heads and that sort of thing. Also think about whats going on its body, the head looks geat, but what about its back and sides? Maybe the leaf head thing could follow the spine all the way to the tail?

I just wanna take a sec to say I do not for the life of me understand the hate boner for pokemon sage. Sure there's some mons in there that aren't great, but guess what. There's some mons in actual pokemon that aren't great. Dodrio, Quilfish, Grumpig, Skuntank, Unfezant, Barbaracle. Just to name one from each gen. And even then that's just an opinion of mine. Cause, you know, everyone's got a different one.

Sorry, unrelated to the thread, it just annoys me how much people seem to get off on hating gen vp when it's no different than any other real pokemon gen.

On topic, I think something based off the caracal would be cool as shit. Could be potentially Ground/Normal, or just Ground. Fast mixed attacker. I just worry because looking at the animal itself, gamefreak would probably make it's fully evolved form fucking worthless

I don't get it either. I've been watching the gen /vp/ threads on and off since they began and I've always thought it was a pretty neat project, and the fact that they've kept this dedicated for this long is very admirable. Most projects completely flop quickly.

Here's what I have for the outline. I'll be adding more detail as I start to render; the stuff that you see in the early sketches will obviously just be coloured in.
I also did the leaves going down its back, but also added some bark for the leaves to sit on.

Fairy wasn't really on the table for it, mostly because I have to other 'mons in the works that have it as a type or subtype.

I'm basing it off the Spotted Hyena, because I adore their body shape. The final render will have the base stage and evolutionary stage for both male and female. You can't do a spotted hyena without dimorphism of the sexes, female will be in an alert/authoritative stance and the male will be in a more passive/defensive position.

On a side note, the Dik-Dik Fairy is almost done with it's line work.

Well, it'd obviously have to take the same amount of planning and time that it took to make this elephant. For now, I'd like to give it a name, some stats, maybe a few attacks...

As far as the name goes, I think something like "Terapholent" would be an alright name.

Yeah, Terapholent. An obvious combination of Teraform and Elephant.

In terms of use, I imagine it'd be able to learn Sandstorm, Sunny Day, and Rain Dance. That'd probably make it a good support or set-up to go on anyone's team.

I also made a type-chart for its resistances.
