i don't mind adjusting strategy at all, infact i've been looking up what's viable in doubles and making a new team based on it because obviously doubles and singles are very different, only a retard would use the exact same team in a totally different battle style, but i'm saying i thought there would be a bit more diversity yet everyone spams the same stuff over and over every single match. i guess i was just hoping it would be better than it is.

Mid level players are going to copy higher level players no matter what game you play. There's still plenty of room for diversity in doubles, considering Wigglytuff and Raichu just won two of the last round of VGC Regional competitions.

To be fair, there's not as much variety in doubles as people are making it seem in this thread. You do see some out of the ordinary mons here and there in top VGC play. But it's generally the same standard mons on most teams just like in singles.

I don't want to make any statements like x is better than y, but once getting in to doubles I've found it far more enjoyable than singles. I also don't want to say that what you're doing is unreasonable, because I, and I think almost everyone who plays doubles did, go through this phase.

Once you adjust the real expansive fun available in doubles opens up. Protect will be there, but without it the game would lose so much manoeuvrability and be far less strategic.

Legitiment question, is it just because you're getting tired of singles? I've played it and its really not that great, almost unbalanced at times. They rarely last long so it doesn't really feel that fun except the occasional drag of someone protecting, and there was one fag I battled irl at a tourney who kept spamming Dark Void Smeargle.

Dark Void Smeargle is deadweight once the Dark Void payload is unleashed. You get two turns with it and in VGC, it takes a slot that could be much better filled by something else.

Dark Void Smeargle is easy to play around. And I personally enjoy the doubles meta more. I like the quick hyper offensive games. Sometimes it's annoying to play against well built perish trap teams or minimize strategies that get lucky with misses but those don't come along very common. Once I get to around 1700 rating on Battle Spot the jap opponents are often rather challenging and they're good & exciting matches to play. I don't get as much excitement with singles games personally most of the time.

Stopped playing singles back before Platinum came out. I think it was right before Smogon banned Garchomp. I just felt that the games went on forever and didn't have a whole lot of variety. I stopped playing for a while, and then as friends got ready for a VGC regional, I decided that I wanted to play too. Went 6-1 in my first competition and never looked back.

I myself thought it would be cool to try VGC because of the whole real life tournaments thing. At first, I thought it was pretty meh, especially when losing most games and struggling to up showdown rating. It was probably when I started getting involved in more of the community like Nuggetbridge that I could see the dynamic strategy that lies both in team building and strategy of doubles, and I liked it.

The whole average of 10-15 turns thing at high level play is actually what makes it so exciting, with every move being so damn important.

all you're doing theoretically is getting use out of two pokemon in one, effectively combining their movesets and averaging out their stats in stead of playing off of each other like doubles should be.

Basically it's like a kid, instead of having two of his pokemon fight together, just duct tapes them together and heaves them at you. it's child's play and uncreative, and the fact that it's one of the most prominently used strategies shows how uninspired those who play it are.

Compare this to Dark Souls, where many players will just spam the cheapest tactics to win with no thought whatsoever that require no skill (see: wrath of the gods and dark-inbued santier's spear)

And Baton Pass is totally worthless since you cant BP to a third of your team.But you also cant switch out and rotate in one turn, which makes it the most tactical battle style in the game.

I was doing Doubles in battle institute and I forgot about Mold Breaker when making my dual-leads Haxorus/Eelektross.
What I shouldve done is used haxorus + Blaziken; Turn one = EQ + Mega-evolve/Protect;, turn 2 Dragon dance or Claw (Or Poison jab if fairies)/Swords Dance;

Give me a scenario where that embarrassing analogy even comes together. Using a move/Switching are the most uninspired forms of play because it's simply a duopoly, whereas protect adds a whole other dimension to the game. It LITERALLY gives more manoeuvrability, there's more things that can be done in a situation than without it.

Your situation is a perfect analogy of a doubles game without switches AND protect, where all you get to do is throw shit together and hope it all works against the other shit without little choice.

As someone whos used Marowak four times, in each game from SS to Y, this is the most effective set. perhaps in a TR its more effecient to run max defense or HP, but even the max speed Marowak failed to outspeed particular threats that wash it away with Surf or even just normal damaging STABs.

Killing it with physical is pretty tough though.

Doubles has a lot, a lot of fun strategies, gimmicks and prediction. Meanwhile singles is a fucking switch fest, and there's really no strategy at all other than putting down hazards and baton pass (And even that's getting suspected? Come on!).
Just because people don't use variety it doesn't mean it's not there. Helping Hand, Beat Up and Justified, Sunny Day and Solarbeam, Prankster Swagger and Lum Berry, Discharge and Volt Absorb, Skill Swap... a myriad of choices that only doubles can offer.

Bullshit, it's far more centralized and you fucking know it.

Splashing one Pokemon onto a team of cookiecutter shit doesn't make it suddenly a diverse meta. Besides the fact that the most original Pokemon get left on the bench due to 4v4, so even if if 1/6 of the Pokemon are an original flavor, you won't even see them 99% of the time anyways and end up fighting Mega Mom and Garchomp all day.

And that's pretty much ignoring the fact that fucking Singles does this at tournaments too. Moltres, Registeel, Azelf, Chesnaught, Tangrowth, Weezing, Kabutops, Gourgeist, Gorebyss, Raikou and Slowbro all were used by winning players in SPL despite not being OU: the team. And unlike VGC if you see them in team preview you actually see them in battle as well.

See, while Smogon tends to present data in usage statistics VGC doesn't have access to this so most of the sites like Nugget Bridge show off single teams and reports. So you're getting an extremely limited amount of information that makes it seem more diverse since you don't see the leagues of cookie cutter teams or failed attempts to use an uncommon mon.

Vcg two years ago was pretty amusing when Skill Swap made Heatran invincible in one of the finals, and year ago even Spore is kinda cheap, there was totally different plays and play styles. Stuff keeps changing and that's the best part doubles has over singles.

There are no stats of how much it's used. And btw the people who play VGC on smogon are often really good players. Nugget Bridge has a link to the VGC room on Showdown. Players from Nugget Bridge play on Showdown all the time to test teams. So you can't really diminish those stats.

I'm quite happy to say neither is more centralising than the other, because that's just what fucking happens to a metagame, but I want to make a point of how those stats are misleading on VGC's terms. It's also that the 'variety' is often within different sets for common pokemon.

Firstly, that team that used Raichu also ran a Staraptor and really weird Rotom and Gyarados builds. Scizor and Gyarados which are well down in usage were the other members. I also want to point out that while NuggetBridge only highlights the high-end of the game - isn't that the final part that matters? Who cares about how many 12 year olds used greninjas? The best reflection on a metagame should be its the high end (which like you said for singles, does contain variety as well).

I believe a 'variety' argument is pretty rubbish to either side of the case.

Don't recall many tournament players or namefags from Nugget Bridge in the VGC room or on the ladder, though maybe they use different handles there. The highest-ranked guy I recognized was Drizzleboy, some seniors player.

You just answered your own god damned question: It's BETTER.

It's like saying that you shouldn't use a low wood or a driver to start a long Par 5 off but you should instead use a 6 or 7 iron, even though the driver or woods give you way more distance.

You realize Pokemon is practically a rock paper scissors game, right? Well you have to use the best scissors so you can beat the best papers that beat the best rocks. Diversity be damned. The fact you're trying to find diversity in competitive Pokemon makes it seem like you're a madman. That's why people on Smogon call you out, because you insist something that's inferior is a better alternative than something superior to it.

It's competitive battling, not diversity battling, you compete with the best. Diversity is a buzzword anyhow.

There's a time to use the "standard" set, and that's nearly all times. Some skilled people sometimes recognise weaknesses in the meta and take advantage by using more uncommon techniques. Both these things are tools to help someone win and should be used at the appropriate time.
