Shit was hilarious, a lot of people were losing their damn minds. Don't ask me why, but I loved tuning in for it.
People said she must be flying, don't ask me why. A lot of people were saying Bug, which is also kind of farfetched. Some people were saying she'd be Dragon because the color scheme matched the type icon.
I thought it'd be a female only normal evolution and we would eventually see a male only version.

More specifically, the Gen V starter evolutions were leaked a few weeks before it came out in Japan, and almost everyone on /vp/ called them fake, with some going into detail about how they were shopped (and one even taking credit for making them)

Then Black and White were released and the leaks were confirmed as real. /vp/ completely lost it at that point

Actually it was more down to "it doesnt resemble any other type, Maybe togekiss." and the kicker "its the lightest AND smallest eeveelution - Fitting for something that needs to fly.

Some promotional artwork even gave Sylveon a symbol to match symbols befitting other eevees - A wing. (We know now it was in fact, a pixie wing not a bird one; Some people DID say it looked vaguely bug-like, including people who thought Sylv was a bug eevee)

To be honest yeah. But once "Sylveon" was confirmed - Especially with "Ninfia" as its JP name, it was a dead ringer for Fairy. Not only that but Snubbull has existed since Gen 2, as has the "Fairy" egg group - mind you, almost half of existing groups not counting the Water 1/2/3 groups are also types.

The only thing that had me convinced was the fact that they didn't outright reveal it's type and that the only type that would have made conventional sense for it would either be Dragon, because all other eeveelutions had a special type, or a new type altogether. Sylveon's various names seemed to suggest a fairy origin so it all kind of made sense.

Well its more probable that they were planning to do all types that resisted themselves; Steel and Poison remained.

Of course, the "Special-based" theory makes more sense now since Fairy has one physical move period.
