I laugh whenever somebody post, "Hoenn remakes are coming!" and are serious about it. The only reason gens I and II got remakes were for the sake of backward compatibility.

The most damning evidence against Hoenn is that the new Pokemon file format removed contest stats; every byte of data has been mapped, and none of them are for contest stats. They kept contest stats in the file format up until Gen V, but finally ditched them in Gen VI.

So, either they removed Contest from the Gen III remakes that fans want so much (which was that gen's gimmick) or Gen III remakes are officially off the table.

Not this gen. The Pokemon file format for this gen has been made. They're not going to add bytes of data because then those Pokemon would be unable to be traded to a game that doesn't support it. If a gen III remake is going to happen, it won't happen until at LEAST gen VII when they upgrade the Pokemon data files.

The moment you transfered the Pokemon to a non R/S game (assuming they could make it compatible), it would lose those stats forever because there's no way to save it. Every byte of data is already used.

I think you are just being too pessimistic about it.

Bottomline if GF really wanted to do R/S remakes this gen it could be done even if they resort to:

Just ditching contests

Not making pokemon tradeable back to XY

Make mons tradeable between XY and R/S but give a warning that all contest data for that poke will be erased

Some other programming wizardry that allows it, trust me if you think something can't be done 9 times out of 10 someone has already tried and done it.

Regardless of what I think or what data is in the game, there's always one very, very convincing argument for why there will be Hoenn remakes: the 1st and 2nd Gen remakes sold a shitton while pulling older fans back into the franchise.

And they're insanely easy to make too, since they piggyback off the current engine while not requiring much new game design. As long as they pull in loads of dosh, the remakes will keep coming.

Hopefully Pokemon doesn't go the route of Final Fantasy. The earlier games had huge worlds because they didn't have to worry about graphics. Anymore, FF games are just linear movies. That's one of the big reasons FFVII hasn't been remade. They said it'd take the production cycle of several games to create all of the artwork for a game as large as FFVII on a modern day console.

HG/SS easily sold over 10 million games. Even in 3D the cost of making the assets is still less than what they can bring in from the remakes.

And what's the alternative? The millions of sales from the remakes have never really cut into sales of the next games, and fans practically expect them at this point given all the speculation. Not making them is just leaving money on the table.

Besides the fact they simply modify existing engines for the pokemon remakes, a lot of assets, namely the Pokemon and all their animations, are already in there, ready to be copy/pasted.

in FF's case, they would more than likely make everything from the ground up, based on the original.

Honestly, no matter WHAT Pokemon game comes out (remake, new gen, new region) they're going to sell truckloads. Pokemon is one of the last true 'system seller' games. The development time for a Hoenn remake and a new region would probably be pretty similar sans the new Pokemon designs. I'd much rather have new content than remakes at this point.

In all seriousness I just hope there is a remake of my favorite gen but knowing genwunners and money there's going to be a remake of the Gen 1 games. At the same time I don't know if the games in pure 3D are going to do them justice. There was a charm of the games being on the GBA with such a graphical upgrade from Gold/Silver to then and TRUMPETS. If they were to add back secret bases, make some Pokemon merch from Gen 3, and bring back the berry making + contests it would practically be the same thing.

Try to get RSE Pokemon onto X and Y.
You need 2 extra games (one of which isn't even on store shelves anymore) and 1 extra device. There is no reasonable backwards compatibility anymore man.

An update isn't even necessary to add new data to the pokemon structure. There's a total of 23 unused bytes, of which 6 are consecutive. Pokemon in future Gen6 games can have these bytes set to anything and be traded to unmodified X/Y without issues.

Adding more data beyond that and increasing the pokemon structure size, however, is a major change that is likely to break a lot of things and involves rearranging and resizing encrypted save file data from the updater.
