I've made this comparison myself when I started my competitive foray back in Gen III.

I guess it sort of is? You have to figure out what your opponent could do and act accordingly and try to out maneuver them, and what you do with your Pokemon (akin to where you move your pieces on the chessboard, I suppose) will determine if the match will be shifted towards your favor or not.

There is a huge difference

In chess one player chooses a move first AND THEN the other player sees his move and acts accordingly etc

In pokemon both players choose a move SIMULTANEOUSLY

Huge difference

(I'm not even mentioning crits/misses etc)

Well, I see where you are coming from and you are partially right.
But it has to happen everytime. Same 6 vs 6 with the same movepool, nature, ability, ev distribution, item, you understand, to begin to compare chess with pokemon.

And then of course, you have the luck issue.

You could have shared your insight on how a pokemon metagame with a set team and the removal of rng would look.

You could even delve into an interesting topic like, "should the teams be static", or "should there be multiple teams to choose from", or "can some moves be chosen". Y'know, explore how much choice is healthy after a static team and lack of rng are established.

Aye. Or, moves could have their accuracy and power adjusted so that they retain their average damage per turn, but are 100% accurate (i.e., stone edge would be 80BP@100acc, aqua tail would be 81BP@100acc, fire blast would be 93.5BP@100acc, etc.)

Well, I've always made this comparison when explaining competitive Pokemon to friends, but so does any turn based strategy can be compared to Chess. Ofcourse it's just a comparison and a rather vague one for reason already mentioned here, like the players not having the exact same team every time (although they have the exact same pool to pick from) and the moves are performed simultaneously and not one after another, but I think it is still a correct comparison to make.

It's an okay comparison. I don't think that relating things is necessarily correct or incorrect, though. The similes a writer uses to highlight the value of something are only as valuable, themselves, as the reaction they catch.

Pokémon has a constant stream of RNG (accuracy, random crits, confusion, paraflinch, etc. etc.) that can determine whether a player loses or wins regardless of how good their team was.
