I've used both, and speaking as a male who always ALWAYS played as a male in the past, Calem is just so fucking gay and lifeless that it's never, ever worth using him.
Girls have so many more customization options than dudes, it's sickening. Every dude just ends up looking the same, while you can actually enjoy the boutique and hair salon features when playing as a girl. My first playthrough as Calem I was decently okay with my character sprite, but when I downloaded my free X version in March and tried out Serena, I had 10 times as much fun just because I could actually customize her looks and outfit as the game progressed, and it helped me connect with my trainer. The whole playthrough felt really unique and more of an adventure because of it.
TL;DR: Girl. Because options. And no, not really.
