Okay guys, so I just gave in and bought a 3DS XL with pokemon X thrown in for £100.

Been a long time fan of the series but haven't played anything since Black.

What can I expect, what should I be looking forward too? General X and Y thread, team suggestions, pitfalls I should look out ofr and any tips you have for me!

Sorry, should have made this clearer, haven't received the console and game yet, literally bought it yesterday and its just been dispatched. Should be here in a couple of days!

Reccomended starter? I'm thinking Frennekin or Froakie.

Chespin is pretty cool, definetely the underdog starter of the generation. But if you really have to choose between Fennekin and Froakie, I recommend Froakie. You should get a better Fire-type option a little bit later in the game.

honestly, all the starters are great in game. just use the one you like.

HOWEVER

Chesnaught is VERY versatile. It can learn a variety of ingame moves and TMs that allow it to take down a variety of opponents (bulldoze, rock tomb, poison jab, dig, needle arm, some fighting moves, and so on). This helps the with the gym challenges. It has a huge flying weakness so you'd have to have a teammate that can help out with that (like raichu).

Delphox is fast and hits hard. It is good ingame, but don't expect it to be dishing out much else besides psychic and fire moves. those two types have good enough coverage ingame, though.

greninja is fast, has good HM utility, and can hit with a variety of moves. It's a pretty decent choice too, although it doesn't hit quite as hard as the other two starters. that's not to say it's weak, it can still dish out decent damage.

I don't HAVE too, just two that stuck out as the most likely for me. Fire / Psychic is like my dream combo, but if he's as weak as everyone says then no deal. I guess that gives chespin more of a look in.

Thanks for the detailed evaluation. I guess solo play isn't exactly gonna be monstrously challenging anyways. Guess I'll look into a proper team build when I get on to the challenge tower ( or whatever the equivalent is in this gen )

Anyone got tips for good 'mons that can be picked up earlier on? I like to get them as soon as available to get attached and mold them properly.

litleo is a good early fire type. It learns work up pretty early and can make use of it. make sure you get the gender you want for its second stage.

It can either have unnerve or rivalry - I suggest the latter, because it's attack stat likes a boost. When you're against the opposite gender, just use special attacks.

If Fire/Psychic is your dream combo and you only plan to use your starter in-game, then Fennekin is the way to go for you. It will get the job done. You may also consider trading for the other starters you didn't pick. That's what I did, I picked Chespin and traded over the remaining two.

You have access to most fossils before the second gym, which is a first. Aerodactyl is really, really good in this game.

Turn off the exp share as soon as you get it, unless you like being overlevelled all the time.
The xp share this gen is a key item that can be turned on or off, this time it shares the exp through all your party, making it extremely easy to level up with no effort.
Example: if the pokemon you led with gains 1000 exp points, every single member of your party will recive 500 exp points for just being in your party.

There's a shitload of pokèmon available in each route, both old and new; relax and use whatever you feel like (if you want to use more than 1 starter or stuff like that you can ask here).

Be careful with the exp share though: now it works as in gen 1, i.e. it gives exp to te entire team WITHOUT DIVIDING IT, meaning you level up much faster. Depending on your playstyle, you may want to disable it until post-game (personally I left it on and carried only 1-2 "main" pokèmon at a time, using the other team slots for dex fodder - or you could just train more than 6 pokèmon).

Sounds like a ridiculous accessibility addition. I can see why they've done it - in fairness this game is still supposed to be playable by kids. Didn't one of the very early gens have the same thing, but it split exp equally? I might actually flick this on from time to time - I always found I run out of trainers to battle and my 'mons end up under-levelled for gyms....but maybe I'm just too adverse to grinding wilds. Thanks for telling me about this, I had no idea.

At the end of the game one of the birds will appear, depending on which starter you picked. Fennekin gives Zapdos, Chespin give Articuno and Froakie gives Moltres.

Ah i'm really glad about the wild spawns. In a lot of old gens this was my complaint - effectively until halfway and beyond everyone would effectively be playing with the same viable team because variety was low as hell. You guys are getting me really pumped for this one now!

The exp share thing does seem to be a dilema....though I think I'll take your suggestion and use the opportunity to flex a whole 10 strong team or something. Will be nice for that to be an option minus the wild training grind. Thanks for the input man!

Thanks for the explanation! Not sure how much of an impact this will have on my starter pick though, I tend to avoid legendaries in my normal team. Just doesn't feel right ( no idea why, never has for me )

Yeah, X/Y's regional pokedex contains around 450 mons total that you can get all in the main game and only 7 of those are legendaries. The regional dex this time around is huge, no 2 routes have the same pokemon.

I think the aim of the exp. this gen was to encourage a lot of different pokemon usage. It gives lots of exp. so you can freely use more than 6 pokemon without having to sacrifice a lot of time to keep them all leveled. that said, if you're only using 6, you will be overleveled with time.

the fossils are decent. one is rock/ice, so a shitload of weaknesses. the other is rock/dragon, which is generally the favoured choice.

the fairy type itself is great, but the actual fairies that are included are subpar. They won't bring you down, but they aren't exactly sweepers. I'd recommend you try one out if you're interested in the new type.

generally, they have good special attack and defense, with lower speed and subpar attack/defense.

Fairy is a great type, but don't feel obligated to use one if you don't want to. I think the best picks for a fairy type on your team are some of the older ones that got retyped to Fairy, like Marill, Gardevoir, and Mr. Mime. Psychic+Fairy moves make for great attack coverage.

Also good choice not picking Chespin; as great as he is, there are a lot of great choices for grass types in this game. Gogoat is a standout who gets nearly as much coverage as Chesnaut without the 4x flying weakness. Plus it can surf.

I just got X Y recently and I want the majority of my team to be underrated/noncompetitive Pokemon. Any suggestions?
As of now my team is Quilladin, Dunsparce and Ralts all EV trained and I bred Headbutt onto Dunsparce and I think I may get a Sableye as well. Any suggestions?

Aururos is the sail fossil, i picked it in X because i literally fell in love with the design, and i still love it, its weaknesses are a pain but its more then able to carry its weight with its ability, which makes normal type moves ice type, so you go through and wall a lot of dragons with it, and it has a move called freeze dry which is super effective against water types which is very handy come the E4, and i gave it flash cannon to just molest fairies, but i literally got Y this morning (brit bong as well) and picked the jaw fossil, id suggest getting helioptile and evolving him, heliolisk is one of my favourite gen 6 pokemon, malamar/pangoro/clawitzer are others i thought were very handy, and if you want a good fairy as well i suggest sylveon if you want a more gen 6 oriented team, but if you want an idea of teams this is mine at the moment on my Y, im at the cyllage gym,

-Braixen
-Ivysaur
-Tyrunt
-Helioptile
-Vaporeon,
Im dropping braixen though once hes a delphox, unsure of a 6th choice poké at the moment though, great game i have to say, you will love it!
