Ok, cool. how does the scoring/ranking work in this. The site says you can do up to 20 battles a day so will playing more games give you a better score or is it more of a w/l ratio type of thing?

I'm in a similar situation. I've got a good Mewtwo to use, but no Xerneas or Yveltal, which I get the feeling will be vital. I'll probably just stick some random stuff in my box, since I don't have much singles stuff ready on-cart.

I went 14-6, max battles for today. 3 of the ones I lost were due to mad hax on the other side. My favorite one is this:
I have 3 pokemon left (a weakened ampharos, did not go mega just to outspeed the opponent's mawile, Noivern and a very weakened Xerneas), he has 1 (mega Mawile).
>mega evolve with ampharos, use thunderbolt, does a great amount (he didn't go for sucker punch because I showed thunder wave earlier in the match)
>he kills me with play rough
>go to noivern to wrap this up
>sucker punch crits and ohkos me
>go to xerneas to take the sucker punch and kill with a moonblast
>sucker crits again and kills me from the range of hp I was at
I did calcs and everything, both crits mattered.
Isn't Pokemon a wonderful game?

So, I went 18-2, with a rating in the low 1700's. Some observations:
-Scarf Xerneas is an awesome lead. In many cases, by the time they figure out it's scarfed they have a dead team member. Strangely, someone led with a Frisk Noivern, and still decided it was a good idea to stay in.
-Klefkis are everywhere. I've faced every possible build so far, I shit you not. Kudos go to the CM offensive one - I gotta try that myself. Swagkeys is still extremely common.
-Will-O-Wisp on Mewtwo is great and has saved my ass plenty of times - most people still don't see it coming and spam sucker punch
-May be just me, but I've seen more Heat Rotoms than Washing machines. Well, I gotta say immunity to both TWave and WoW is pretty damn useful, especially in this meta.
-What the actual living fuck happened to the hax ratios? Did they use Maison's RNG system or something? Crits, full paralysis and secondary effects literally happen every other turn and for both sides. Hax fucked both me and my opponents over royally on a surprising number of occasions.

I couldn't possibly be unhappier with my team. Didn't have time to evolve+train my recently hatched penta shiny Noibat, so I put Goodra in there. Didn't have time to EV train my Smogonbird, so in goes physical Char X. I'm 9-5, though. Far better than I expected.

What's the deal with Greninja always switching out or using U-Turn against my Ampharos? I always figure they're going to use Ice Beam expecting me to Mega Evolve, so I pick Power Gem instead. But nope, they always switch out.

Greninja doesn't have the power to OHKO an Ampharos (neither does SE ice beam on mega Amph) unless it's packing choice specs, so it's the smarter play to do.

At level 50, both of mega Ampharos' stab moves have the ability to OHKO Greninja, especially after LO damage.

Update. Did my 20 battles for the day. 15 wins, 5 losses not bad.

Though I really wish my Battle Box wasn't locked so I could form my team again, which has some Gen V mons in it, so I can do regular battles while I wait.
