It was the late 90s, they're a massive franchise aiming mainly to people between the ages of about 6-15 or so. They had one of two options:
-Shitty pop music which the kids are eating up at the time
-Edgy nu-metal like Limp Bizkit with swearing and shit in the music that mainly shows for older kids/young adults (11-21 or so) like the WWE/F were embracing heavily at the time

Since majority of the fanbase were under 16 or so, it's more favorable for business and good publicity that they go in the safe pop direction. Case closed.

A lot of the songs were made before the album came out. Not enough pokemob going on. Movie 3 soundtrack didn't have enough big names backing it. Movie 2000 had the perfect mix of the two.

Speaking from a Norwegian perspective, since I have no idea how well known they are internationally these days:

Marion is still active and reasonably popular. She's hosted and made appearances on a bunch of TV shows in recent times, and your average dude on the street definitely knows who she is.

Apparently Marit technically has a solo career too, but she's an obscure nobody I didn't even remember the name of until I looked it up, and I doubt she sells very well.
