>>18974497>I don't understand what's going on in that second image, there are a bunch of different sets of characters, and the one labelled foul play doesn't match the one in Bulbapedia...It's from a Japanese dictionary giving English translations of the word ikasama (which is written with kanji as 如何様, with hiragana as いかさ, and with katakana as イカサマ. Pokemon uses the third one). The Japanese in the parenthesis just explains which context each translation fits in.
The point is that despite an actual Japanese dictionary listing "Foul Play" as a translation of the word, Bulba insists that is inaccurate, and that "Trickery" is truer to the original word than what the official translation used. Of course, that's not true.
>Those might be direct, literal translations, that's how things are sound when you translate between languagesThey're not.
I have absolutely no clue what's up with
>>18974432If you want to be stupidly literal, it'd be "gather (or focus) fighting spirit", but "focus energy" is perfectly fine too.
I have no idea where they got "improvement" from, the word doesn't mean "improve" in any possible sense, and it's a verb, not a noun anyway.
As for
>>18974451it's just the word for "poison" repeated twice, giving the meaning of "even more poisonous than just 'poisonous'". Toxic is a very logical translation, and there's nothing there about "excessiveness". I'm not sure they even know what "excessive" means.
