People may call bullshit whenever Thunder Armor is brought up, but instead of being a shitty asspull to get Ash to win, it was an actual strategy built upon the multiple times Swellow took on Electric-type attacks and completely fucking them over because of it's will not to go down.

Sure the battle still looked good but it was in no way comparable to this battle.
Motherfucking Froakie was doing the matrix, climbing rocks, using Shadow Clones, Water Pulsing rock monsters in the face, and overall looking absolutely astounding. And Froakie wasn't the only one pulling off a good performance with good animation, because Pikachu climbing Draco Meteors with his Iron Tail and then smacking the Ancient Power rocks back was Sinnoh-tier badass. There hasn't been a single battle in XY that has looked as good as Ash VS Grant. Sure the battle could've been longer had Grant used Amaura against Fletchling, but even Fletchling looked great with it's Double Team and Steel Wings.
The only other battle to look even close to as good was Froakie VS Frogadier. Battles are a lot better, animation and choreography-wise, when they are unique and don't consist of stock animation.

Also, he didn't throw out all his Pokemon as his fodder, his plan was obviously to scout for how Tyrunt battles and land as many hits as possible. Froakie went in the same way he did with Onix, using Double Team to throw off the opponent and climb the rocks to get close for a direct hit. Froakie ended up landing a fierce Bubble before going down as well as Fletchling who at least landed a direct Steel Wing and Air Cutter.

I didn't even like the battle because Onix was used instead of Amaura but even I think it is the second best animated battle this saga, second to the Frogadier battle.

iwane is ten times better at animating stuff versus every other director, and this is even more obvious in battle heavy episodes like gyms
thus any gym battle not animated by iwane automatically becomes at best... average, in the animation department. the Grant battle, for example, i wouldn't call the animation "stiff" but certainly it was not as sleek and nicely flowing as it is when iwane does it. imo gyms and o ther long battles NEEDS his animation skills to become fully enjoyable
