>And I think you meant to say New York?Doesn't New Jersey fall under New Yorks jurisdiction?
>background checks Already Federal Law, when you purchase a gun from an FFL, you must fill out a form for a background check, they'll then check your form and make sure you're not a convicted felon or have been mentally unfit by a court of law.
I don't think background checks as they are, are inherently a bad idea, but I think they could be implemented better, the system is a bit shoddy.
If you're talking about Universal Background checks, as in checks for private transfers between individuals, that's an incredibly expensive pipedream, you would literally have to register every gun owner and gun in the country, and it would literally require that individuals could run background checks on other individuals, something I don't think is right.
>and restrictions on certain types of weaponsDoesn't really matter. While a couple of "military style" weapons have been used in some massacres, the overwhelming majority of weapons used in crime are cheap and shitty pocket-pistols. Rifles at all, of any type, don't even account for even 1% of gun crime, so there's no point in banning any kind of rifle, "military" or civilian.
