Pickpocket isn't that shit, once you Shell Smash and lose the white herb, you can take an opponents item, it's pretty handy.

Yeah, kind of annoying honestly, since it's otherwise a decent Barbaracle.
I guess it was just less hassle for them to program it this way. Still a pain in the ass. Hopefully they fix that shit in the future.

Hadn't thought of it that way, I usually use the old Focus Sash/Shell Smash combo. Might give it a shot, could be fun. Still, seems a bit silly not to have the option to change in the first place. I'd get it if it were a normal pokemon without the hidden ability, but not vice versa.

Not listening to the previous replies, the acual reason is because the HA isn't as easily determined as the normal abilities and you would need to change some shit about the personality value of the respective mon, which could then fuck up shiny status and shit...
